Looking for:
R.P. Mcmurphy:
30+ Male. Huge, infectious laugh. An unfocused powerhouse, capable of wide swings of emotion. A man who commands attention and can take a room at will. A reactionary man who “does” and thinks about it later. Chooses time in a mental ward over prison work to escape the hard labor. His plan is perfect until it’s not. Star charisma.
Nurse Ratched:
35+ Female. The tyrannical head of the ward. There is no “gray” in her world, only right, wrong and punitive action. Womanly and suggestive body. Capable of silencing a room with a look.
Chief Bromden:
30+ Male. Half Native American (mother was Caucasian). Very tall, bull-muscled man made “small” by Society. Pretends to be catatonic to escape from being seen. Anchors the play with metaphorical monologues.
Harding:
30+ Male. Effete, educated and particular. Repressed homosexual. De facto leader of the patients. Self-committed to the institution.
Billy Bibbit:
20+ Male, actually 31 y/o who still looks like a boy. Stutters. A suicidal virgin who was dominated by his mother... and now Nurse Ratched.
