VOCAL/INSTRUMENTAL AUDITION:

You may submit singing either a song in the style of the show, or from the show. Please accompany yourself on the instrument required for your role (noted in the character descriptions below). You may also include links to additional videos if you wish.

Playing an instrument is required for most roles. Performers should be able to play their instrument with a level of competency enabling them to confidently play with other performers as part of a band.

Other instruments may be added based on performers' abilities.

If you play an instrument, please also include video of you playing the primary instrument indicated for
the role you are submitting for.

SIDES:

Please submit a video reading the side for the role you are submitting for. If you are unable to find a reader, you may also submit a monologue in the style of the show. Sides are available at this link (The libretto and vocal book are also available at this link.):

SYNOPSIS: On the streets of Dublin, an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant are drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, an unexpected friendship and collaboration quickly evolves into a powerful but complicated love story, underscored by emotionally charged music. Featuring all of the magical songs from the critically acclaimed film, including the Oscar-winning Falling Slowly, this achingly beautiful, joyously uplifting show strikes an unforgettable chord in audiences and speaks to the power of music to connect us all. A show like that only comes around Once.

Playing an instrument is required for this production for most roles. Instruments needed are: piano, guitar, violin, cello, bass, percussion, accordion. Other instruments may be added based on performer’s abilities.

SEEKING:

Girl (female-identifying, any ethnicity; 25-35); A determined and witty dreamer. Girl has come from the Czech Republic to Dublin for a new life. She is passionate about playing the piano and making music. Direct, intelligent, and with a no-nonsense attitude. Speaks with a Czech dialect. Vocal range: Mezzo. Plays piano.

Guy (Male-identifying, any ethnicity; 25-35): A down-on-his-luck musician in Dublin. He is lovesick and lost, but charismatic. He loves making songs and playing guitar but is ready to give up. Works for his father in a vacuum repair shop. Speaks with an Irish dialect. Vocal range: Bari Tenor. Plays guitar.

Billy (Male-identifying, any ethnicity, 30-50) A music store owner who allows Girl to play piano in his shop. A big man who is opinionated and loyal to those he cares about and also possesses a soft side. Plays guitar and cajon. Speaks with a Czech accent. Vocal range: Baritone

Reza (Female-identifying; any ethnicity, 25-35) Girl's vivacious, flirtatious, funny & smart roommate. Plays violin. Speaks with a Czech accent. Vocal range: Soprano.

Baruska (Female-identifying; any ethnicity, 45-60) Girl's mother. Loving, generous, and idealistic. Plays Accordion. Speaks with a Czech accent. Vocal range: Alto

Bank Manager (any gender identity; any ethnicity, 30-60) Corporate on the outside, but artistic on the inside. Plays guitar. Cello skills are a plus. Speaks with a strong Irish accent. Vocal range: open.

Da (Male-identifying; any ethnicity, 50-70) Guy's father. A caring man who loves his son. Plays Mandolin. Vocal range is open; Vocal range top: E4 Vocal range bottom: G3

Svec (Male-identifying; any ethnicity, 20-40) Girl's quirky roommate who loves both television and coffee. Plays drums (kit/cajon/percussion). Guitar, Mandolin, banjo and ukelele skills a plus. Speaks with a strong Czech accent. Vocal range: Baritone

Andrej (Male-identifying; any ethnicity, 20-30) Girl's roommate. A friendly, good-natured guy with big dreams who works at a fast-food chain. Speaks with a strong Czech accent. Plays guitar, electric bass and ukelele. Vocal range: Baritone

Eamon (Male-identifying; any ethnicity, 20s to 50s) A Dublin music studio manager where Guy/Girl record their album. Initially wary of them but grows to appreciate them. Plays guitar and piano. Speaks with an Irish accent. Vocal type: Baritone

Emcee (Any Gender identity; any ethnicity, 20s to 50s) Host of an open mic at a Dublin pub with a great sense of humor. Speaks with a Irish accent. Plays guitar or cello. Other instrument skills are a plus.

Ex-Girlfriend (Female-identifying; any ethnicity, 20-40) Guy's ex-girlfriend. Wanting a better life, she's moved from Dublin to New York. Likeable and playful. Plays violin. Speaks with an Irish accent. Vocal range: Mezzo.

Ivonka (Female-identifying; any ethnicity, 6-10 to play 5) Girl's daughter.
