Natasha, Pierre, & the Great Comet of 1812 is an electropop opera by Obie winner Dave Malloy based on Tolstoy's War & Peace.
Musically the piece is eclectic and ambitious, encompassing Romantic, modern and avant-garde classical music, Russian folk, indie rock, jazz and electronica. The vocal style should be unique, soulful, idiosyncratic and decidedly un-Broadway.
SEEKING:
NATASHA
Female, 19 year old ingenue. Profoundly, lethally romantic, innocent, and doughy-eyed. Belt/Soprano.
ANATOLE
Male, Late 20s aristocrat. Power and Rake-ishness incarnate. Seductive hedonist. Ambisexual - think David Bowie. High Operatic Tenor.
PRINCE BOLKONSKY
Male, 60s, conservative, old-fashioned aristocrat whose dementia has causes him to be alternately nasty and incapacitated. Lives with his still unmarried daughter, whom he torments but also relies on to take care of him. Growly Baritone-Tenor, should also play an instrument: guitar, piano, accordion, cello, or another string or woodwind.
HELENE
Female, Late 20s aristocrat, the queen of society. Deceptive and amoral. Highly sexualized and not overly intelligent. Sense of humor. Chesty Alto (Belt to Bb)
PIERRE
The socially-awkward, illegitimate son of an old Russian grandee. A melancholy outsider, despite his great wealth. Gruff, pessimistic and detached. Baritone. 30s.
SONYA
Natasha's dear friend and confidante, she has lived with Natasha's family like a daughter since childhood. Passionate, selfless, loyal, and devoted to her friend. Alto. 20s.
PRINCESS MARY
Lonely, plain, spinster daughter of a wealthy price. She is cut off from the world in her father's grand old house and resigned to his cruelty. Operatic soprano. 30s.
