Local actors are encouraged to submit.

Mark Cohen - Male Identifying, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Mark is an aspiring filmmaker and video artist who narrates the show as he films the lives of his friends. A bit of a nerd, he is very much soul-searching. Mark never leaves home without a camera. He is more comfortable viewing the world through his lens than in actively engaging in it. Vocal Range: A2-G4.
Roger Davis - Male Identifying, 20s, any ethnicity. Roommate to Mark, Roger is a struggling musician who battles with being HIV-positive. His goal to write one more song is stalled from loss of creative inspiration and energy. He falls in love with Mimi but is afraid of commitment. Guitar skills are preferred for this role. Vocal Range: A2-A4.
Mimi Marquez - Female Identifying, 20s, Hispanic or Spanish descent. Mimi is a performer at a local strip club with an addiction which has led to becoming HIV-positive. She is slender and attractive, but also very sick. Ex-girlfriend to Benny, she falls in love with Roger, but struggles with his lack of commitment. Vocal Range: Eb3-E5.
Maureen Johnson - Female Identifying, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Maureen is a performance artist who is unpredictable, bold, and sassy. She recently dumped Mark and is now dating Joanne. She is not afraid of taking on the establishment through performance and speaks her mind. Vocal Range: C4-F5.
Tom Collins - Male Identifying, mid 20s-mid 30s, any ethnicity. Tom is a computer genius and a liberal professor who has recently been expelled from MIT. A former roommate of Mark and Roger, Tom is HIV-positive and falls in love with Angel. He is genuine, nurturing, and caring. Vocal Range: F#2-A4.
Angel Dumott Schunard - Non-Binary, Trans, or Male Identifying, mid 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Angel is a drag queen and street drummer who is HIV-positive. Exuberant, generous, and selfless, Angel lives life to the fullest. An incredible gift of dance and magnetic personality, Angel meets and falls in love with Tom. Percussionist skills a plus. Vocal Range: C3-A4.
Joanne Jefferson - Female Identifying, mid 20s-early 40s, any ethnicity. An Ivy League lawyer and activist, Joanne is headstrong and smart. She is in a tumultuous relationship with Maureen and struggles not to be jealous of Maureen’s flirtation with others. She is committed to helping those less fortunate than she is. Vocal Range: G3-E5.
Benjamin Coffin III - Male Identifying, late 20s-30s, any ethnicity. The landlord of Mark and Roger's apartment building. A former roommate in the loft, Benny traded in his personal morals for power and wealth. He had been letting Roger and Mark live in the apartment for free, but he is now forcing them to pay rent or be evicted. Vocal Range: Bb2-F#4.

Buddy - Male Identifying, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Born a human but raised at the North Pole as a Christmas Elf, Buddy is eager to find his place in the world. He is a child at heart and that child-like curiosity makes him both endearing and gets him into trouble. Vocal Range: Ab2-C5.
Jovie - Female Identifying, mid 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity. Jovie works at Macy's and has a bit of a cynical outlook on life and love because of the men she's dated. She is caught off guard by Buddy's genuinely big heart. Vocal Range: G3-D5.
Walter Hobbs - Male Identifying, 50s-60s, any ethnicity. Buddy's workaholic father. He is a Children's book writer, but lacks any of the childlike spirit that Buddy has. He is selfish, tense, and generally angry with life. Vocal Range: A2-G4.
Emily - Female Identifying, 40s-50s, any ethnicity. Walter's wife. Though she is sweet and willing to take him in, she thinks Buddy is crazy at first. Wishes her husband would spend more time with the family. Vocal Range: F3-Eb5.
Michael - Male Identifying, Early teens, any ethnicity. Buddy's stepbrother who is excited to have a new friend and brother. Unlike his mother, he doesn't take much convincing to have Christmas spirit, but like his mother, he wishes his father would spend more time with the family. Vocal Range: F3-G5.
Deb - Female Identifying, 20s-50s, any ethnicity. Walter's secretary. Takes an instant liking to Buddy simply for the novelty of it. Though she aims to please and is a bit of a suck-up, she feels under appreciated. Vocal Range: D4-Eb5.
Manager - Male Identifying, 30s-50s, any ethnicity. A heavy-set manager at Macy's. He is a good, friendly guy just trying to do his job and get by. Vocal Range: B2-F#4
Greenway - Male Identifying, 50s-60s, any ethnicity. Walter's boss. He is what Walter will become if he continues down the path he is on. A tyrannical, workaholic who cares nothing about the people around him or who work for him.
Santa - Male Identifying, 60s-80s, any ethnicity. Just another working man. Loves his job and Christmas, but also likes to kick-back and watch the game when a rare opportunity arises. A natural storyteller. Vocal Range: A2-E4.
Chadwick - Male Identifying, 40s-50s, any ethnicity. One of Walter's right-hand men. He is desperate to keep his job, and perhaps the dumber of the two.
Matthews - Male Identifying, 30s-50s, any ethnicity. One of Walter's right-hand men. He is desperate to keep his job and is the schemer of the two.

Troy Maxson - Male Identifying, 40s-60s, Black. Former baseball star in the Negro Leagues, now works for the sanitation department, lifting garbage into truck. Husband to Rose, father to Lyons, Cory, and Raynell, and brother to Gabriel, and best friend to Jim Bono. Some singing.
Rose Maxson - Female Identifying, 40s-50s, Black. Troy's wife and mother of his second child, Cory. African American housewife, who volunteers at her church regularly and loves her family. Rose's request that Troy and Cory build a fence in their small, dirt backyard comes to represent her desire to keep her loved-ones close to her love. Unlike Troy, Rose is a realist, not a romantic longing for the by- gone days of yore. She has high hopes for her son, Cory and sides with him in his wish to play football. Rose's acceptance of Troy's illegitimate daughter, Raynell, as her own child, exemplifies her compassion. Some singing.
Cory Maxson - Male Identifying, Late Teens-Early 20s, Black. Troy and Rose Masons’ son. A senior in high school. An ambitious young man who has the talent and determination to realize his dreams, Cory comes of age during the course of the play when he challenges and confronts Troy and leaves home.
Lyons Maxson - Male Identifying, 30s, Black. Troy's son from a previous relationship. Lyons is an ambitious and talented jazz musician. He grew up without Troy for much of his childhood because Troy was in prison. Lyons, like most musicians, has a hard time making a living. Some knowledge on piano and/or guitar, but not required.
Gabriel Maxson - Male Identifying, 40s-50s, Black. Troy's younger brother. Gabriel was a soldier in the Second World War, during which he received a head injury that required a metal plate to be surgically implanted into his head. Gabriel wanders around the Maxson family's neighborhood carrying a basket and singing. He often thinks he is not a person, but the angel Gabriel who opens the gates of heaven with his trumpet for Saint Peter on Judgment Day. Gabriel exudes a child-like exuberance and a need to please. Some singing.
Jim Bono - Male Identifying, 40s-60s, Black. Troy's best friend of over thirty years. Jim Bono is usually called Bono or Mr. Bono by the characters in Fences. Bono and Troy met in jail, where Troy learned to play baseball. He is married to a woman named Lucille, who is friends with Rose. Bono is a devoted husband and friend.
Raynell Maxson - Female Identifying, 7-10 years old, Black. Troy's illegitimate child, mothered by Alberta, his lover, who passed away while giving birth. Her innocent need for care and support convinces Rose to take Troy back into the house. Some singing.

Jen - Female Identifying, 30s, any ethnicity. The bride to be. Now living in New York, she returns to her home in North Carolina to make preparations for her wedding. She has dreamt of her wedding day her entire life.
Macy - Female Identifying 30s, Black. A journalist from Brooklyn. She is Jen’s reluctant fiancée.

SEEKING:
Christopher Boone - Male Identifying, 18+ to play a teenager, any ethnicity. An English teenager who is an outsider due to his unique perception of the world, which he sees in surprising and revealing ways. He notices things in minute detail yet has difficulty understanding social and emotional cues and difficulty empathizing with others. This lack of understanding often makes the world seem frustrating and frightening to him, and he can become agitated and even violent when he has to deal with too many overwhelming external stimuli. Incredibly intelligent but shy and mistrusting of strangers, Christopher feels things deeply but doesn’t know how to express or articulate them. He has a brilliant mind, can be fixated on certain topics, and thinks in a highly logical way, which makes him excel in math and science, but because he perceives language literally, he does not understand sarcasm or metaphors. From a diagnostic point of view, he is probably on the autism spectrum and exhibits some behavior that might be characterized as having Asperger’s Syndrome, though what is most important is that he is different. Physically very fit and agile.
Ed Boone / Others - Male Identifying, Late 30s-Early 50s, any ethnicity. Christopher’s father. He is estranged from his wife, Judy and struggling as a single parent trying to raise his son the best he can. A working class man. Proud, gruff, and brusque, he is unable to convey his emotions and feelings but loves his son deeply. He is a good man but there is a lot on Ed’s shoulders when he first enters the play – in pain and near breaking point, though he does not openly express it. He has trouble communicating with Christopher, who often frustrates him. And though he’s naturally practical and much more patient in dealing with Christopher than Judy, a difficult situation can make him lose it, sometimes violently. A plumber and heating engineer by trade, naturally good with his hands. English accent appropriate to working middle class.
Judy Boone / Others - Female Identifying, Late 30s-Early 50s, any ethnicity. Christopher’s mother, she is estranged from her husband, Ed after having an affair with her neighbor Roger. She works as a secretary and is a working-class woman with a tough exterior who has no support system to raise her son and blames herself for her inability to cope with him effectively. She has had a hard life and had to fight for things, which she is ready to do, as she is feisty and doesn’t take anything lying down. Loving, yet impatient, she has felt very alone in her situation with Christopher, and it frustrates her to a point of absolute desperation. She wishes she knew how to truly reach and care for Christopher. Independent, lonely and proud, she doesn’t easily ask for help and has never had the proper social resources to help her. English accent appropriate to working middle class. Physically trim.
Siobhan / Others - Female Identifying, Late 20s-40s, any ethnicity. Christopher’s teacher and mentor, she is the only person in Christopher’s life with an understanding of his situation. She strives to teach Christopher how society works and how to behave within its guidelines. Constantly negotiating around Christopher’s anger, she is professional, warm, caring, calm, gentle and self-possessed and also sensitive to his strained relationship with his father. She often serves as the narrator of Christopher’s story and of his feelings. English, Irish, Welsh, or Scottish accent.
Mrs. Shears/ Mrs. Gascoyne/ Others - Female Identifying, Late 30s-50s, any ethnicity. MRS SHEARS: Roger’s ex-wife and Christopher’s neighbor, she is rough around the edges. She is furious at the world as a result of being betrayed and abandoned by her husband. Worn out by life, disappointed, haggard. It is her dog, Wellington that was found killed in the night. MRS GAS-COYNE: The headmistress of the school for “special needs” children that Christopher attends. Condescending and lacking in sensitivity, nuance, and imagination. English accents appropriate to class.
Roger Shears / Duty Sergeant / Others - Male Identifying, Late 30s-50s, any ethnicity. ROGER SHEARS: Mrs. Shears ex-husband. A middle-class man who works at a bank. Has left his wife as a result of his relationship with Judy, which not built on sturdy ground. Doesn’t have a clue or any interest in understanding Christopher. DUTY SERGEANT: A local Swindon desk sergeant (policeman) who releases Christopher to Ed’s custody after Christopher’s been arrested. Firm, experienced, tough but fair-minded. English accents appropriate to class. Strong, fit and agile.
Mrs. Alexander / Others - Female Identifying, 60s-70s, any ethnicity. One of Christopher’s neighbors who has probably lived in Swindon her entire life. May be middle class or middle working class. She is a lonely older woman without a lot of means. She is kind, and so hungry for a connection with Christopher that she tries to help him and ultimately reveals information to him about his mother that he did not know. English accents appropriate to class.
Reverend Peters / Station Policeman / Others - Male Identifying, 40s-50s, any ethnicity. REVEREND PETERS: A vicar, pleasant enough, tries to answer Christopher’s questions about religion and is later tasked with supervising Christopher during a test. STATION POLICEMAN: A Swindon policeman who gets stuck on a train to London while trying to convince Christopher to get off the train. Easily outsmarted by Christopher. English accents appropriate to class. Any ethnicity. Strong, fit and agile.
Policeman / Mr. Thompson / Man with Socks / Others - Male Identifying, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. POLICEMAN: A Swindon policeman who arrests Christopher after Christopher hits him while being questioned about the death of Wellington, the dog. He has no patience or understanding of Christopher’s way of thinking. MR. THOMPSON: A neighbor that Christopher interviews during his investigation of who killed Wellington, the dog. Doesn’t have patience for Christopher’s line of questioning. MAN WITH SOCKS: A guy waiting for the tube in London who suddenly has to help convince Christopher to get up from the train tracks. English accents appropriate to class. Strong, fit and agile.
No. 40 / Information Clerk / Punk Girl / Others - Female Identifying, 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity. NO. 40: A woman who is a neighbor of Christopher’s who he interviews during his investigation of who killed Wellington the dog. She tries to gently suggest to Christopher that he should talk to his father before asking these questions. INFORMATION: A busy information clerk in a London Rail-road Station who Christopher asks for directions. PUNK GIRL: A young woman in the tube station who tries to help Christopher. English accents appropriate to class. Strong, fit and agile.

SEEKING:
Violet - Female Identifying, 20s-mid 30s, White. Violet is a young North Carolina woman whose face was scarred in a childhood accident. She is stubborn and prickly but filled with equal parts hope and obsession that she may heal and be made beautiful. Strongly influenced by movies, she idealizes glamourous movie stars. She's direct with people who stare at her scar, which is prominently located on her face. She has saved up enough money to journey across the south on a bus in hopes of having a miracle from a TV evangelist. Vocal Range: G3-F5.
Flick - Male Identifying, 20s-early 30s, Black. Flick is a soldier, a dreamer, and a go-getter. He doesn't enjoy the army but enjoys the respect it garners him. There is something gentle and good about him. He is not moved much by Violet's scar. He was in basic training with Monty. Vocal Range: C4-E6.
Monty - Male Identifying, 20s-early 30s, White. A paratrooper and Flick's friend from basic training. Rough around the edges. Self-consumed, but not necessarily purposefully so. Fighting his own demons. Believes himself to be fearless and irresistible to most–especially women. He is a bit full of himself. Monty was in basic training with Flick, and now he trains young men to jump out of airplanes. Vocal Range: A3-A5.
Young Violet - Female Identifying, 10-13 years old, White. Not quite as guarded or prickly as her older self, but still tough and stubborn. She has a keen curiosity and the rough edges of being brought up solely by her father. Vocal Range: A3-E5
Father - Male Identifying, 50s-60s, White. A simple, widowed man who lovingly raises his daughter alone doing the best he can with the little knowledge and resources he has to do so. Stern but friendly, smart but uneducated. Accidentally scars Violet's face while he is chopping wood. He can be stern with her at times in an attempt to protect and toughen her. Teaches her to hide from others so she won't be tortured by them. Vocal Range: A3-F5.
Old Lady - Female Identifying, 50s-60s, White. A former beauty in her heyday. Staunch, tired and frustrated with life. She's gossipy, nosy. Violet is the unwilling recipient of her boldness. She's on her way to Nashville to see her son Harvey, who works in a cellophane plant. Doubles as Hotel Hooker. Vocal Range: F3-E5.
Preacher - Male Identifying, 30s-50s, any ethnicity. An impassioned, theatrical man who preach-es with all the bravado he can muster. Once had a true healing touch but has lost it in his quest to become a showman. Dismissive and egotistical. Doublings include Radio Singer, Bus Driver 1, Bus Driver 4. Vocal Range: B3-G5.
Virgil - Male Identifying, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. The Preacher's assistant. Knows the smoke & mirrors of the Preacher's show and must begrudgingly deal with anyone who might derail it. Doubles as Billy Dean, Bus Driver 2, Radio Singer and Bus Passenger. Vocal Range: B3-B5.
Music Hall Singer - Female Identifying, 30s-40s, Black. The singer at the dance hall in Memphis. Doubles as a Bus Passenger. Vocal Range: A3-G5.
Lulu Buffington - Female Identifying, 40s-60s, Black. A member of the volunteer choir that sings for the Preacher's telecast. Sings for God with passion and power. African American. Doubles as Almeta (Landlady) and Bus Passenger. Vocal Range: F3-G5.
Leroy Evans - Male Identifying, 30s-40s, White. A citizen of Spruce Pine with a dog named Roscoe. Not very bright. Doubles as a Radio Soloist, Bus Driver 3, and Bus Passenger. Vocal Range: B3-F5.

In accordance with Equity guidelines for in-person auditions, the following COVID safety measures will be required:
Everyone entering the audition venue will be required to undergo a symptom check and provide one of the following prior to entry into the venue:
* Proof of full vaccination
* OR Proof of a negative PCR test result taken no earlier than 48 hours prior to entry
* OR Proof of two negative antigen test results (e.g. the first taken the night before and the second taken no less than 2 hours) prior to entry into the venue.
In addition, two-ply cloth face masks, surgical masks, singer’s masks and respirators N95, KN95 or KF94) will be allowed for face coverings. Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas are not acceptable face coverings. Everyone in the holding room and audition room will always wear a face covering as described above, except for the actor when they are actively auditioning.
If the risk level for Davidson County is trending upwards and may rise to High (Red) we will con-tact members with appointments at least 24 hours before the first audition appointment time to let them know there is a chance that the auditions may need to be postponed or cancelled. All members with appointments will be notified if the auditions must be postponed or cancelled.
