PREPARATION

If you are interested in auditioning for only GLASS MENAGERIE or IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, please prepare a one-minute monologue. If you’d like to show both monologue and song, both selections must be short. If you are only singing, please prepare a short cut of something you absolutely love to sing. Bring your book with you in case additional selections are requested.

THE GLASS MENAGERIE

First Rehearsal: Feb 12th, 2024

SEEKING:

Amanda Wingfield - 40s - 50s, Female Presenting. Any ethnicity. Laura and Tom’s mother. A proud, vivacious woman, Amanda clings fervently to memories of a vanished, genteel past. She is simultaneously admirable, charming, pitiable, and laughable.

Laura Wingfield - 20s, Female Presenting. Any ethnicity. Amanda’s daughter and Tom’s older sister. Laura has a bad leg, on which she has to wear a brace, and walks with a limp. Twenty-three years old and painfully shy, she has largely withdrawn from the outside world and devotes herself to old records and her collection of glass figurines.

Tom Wingfield - 20s - 40s, Male Presenting. Any ethnicity. Amanda’s son and Laura’s younger brother. An aspiring poet, Tom works at a shoe warehouse to support the family. He is frustrated by the numbing routine of his job and escapes from it through movies, literature, and alcohol.

Jim O’Connor - 20s, Male Presenting. Any ethnicity. An old acquaintance of Tom and Laura. Jim was a popular athlete in high school and is now a shipping clerk at the shoe warehouse in which Tom works. He is unwaveringly devoted to goals of professional achievement and ideals of personal success.

SEEKING:

Bess - [CAST] Soprano - Black, Female Presenting - a young woman and friend of Crown, later of Porgy. Lives with Porgy during Crown’s absence but returns briefly to Crown.

Porgy - Bass-Baritone - Black, Male Presenting - An old beggar. He is frail in body, but his hands are powerful. He says little but observes much. When Bess moves in and becomes his woman after Crown has fled following Robbins’ murder, Porgy is transformed from an impassive observer of life to a lover of children as well as of Bess. Fearful of losing Bess to Crown, Porgy kills him, but he loses her anyway.

Crown - [CAST] Baritone - Black, Male Presenting - violent lover of Bess. Dangerous when drunk. Sportin’ Life - [CAST] Tenor - Black, Male Presenting - drug dealer from New York.

Jake/Ensemble - baritone – Black, male presenting – a fisherman.

Clara/Ensemble - soprano – Black, Female Presenting – Jake’s wife.

Ensemble - 3 Black Men and 3 Black Women to play multiple parts representing the residents of Catfish Row.

Sweeney Todd - 40s/50s Male Presenting. Any ethnicity. Vocal Range: F2- Gb4. A wrongfully imprisoned barber seeking to right the wrongs committed against him. He is Johanna's father, singularly focused on taking bloody revenge. Our story's tormented protagonist.

Mrs. Lovett/Ensemble - 30s/40s Female Presenting. Any ethnicity. Vocal Range: G3- E5. An entrepreneurial and amoral meat pie shop owner. She falls in love with Todd and turns his desire for revenge into a profitable business venture.

Anthony/Ensemble - 20s Male Presenting. Any ethnicity. Vocal Range: Bb2- F4. A naive and youthful sailor returning to London. He helps Todd return to London and unexpectedly falls in love with Johanna.

Johanna/Ensemble - 20s Female Presenting. Any ethnicity. Vocal Range: Bb3-A5. A spritely girl, full of innocence, constantly yearning for freedom. Todd's long-lost daughter and Turpin's ward.

Tobias/Ensemble - 12 to 18 Male Presenting. Any ethnicity. Vocal Range: Bb2-Ab4. A poor youngster apprenticed to Pirelli. He finds a surrogate family in Todd and Lovett.

Judge Turpin/Ensemble - [CAST] 50s/60s Male Presenting. Any ethnicity. Vocal Range: E2-Gb4. A lecherous public official who portrays himself as a sanctimonious authoritarian. He takes advantage of his position in the city and is responsible for imprisoning Todd.

The Beadle/Fogg/Ensemble - 40s/50s Male Presenting. Any ethnicity. Vocal Range: D3-D5. A pompous public official. He is deeply loyal to the corrupt Turpin.

Beggar Woman/Ensemble - 30s to 50s Female Presenting. Any ethnicity. Vocal Range: Ab3-F5. A deranged and schizophrenic woman who harbors a dark, surprising secret.

Adolfo Pirelli/Ensemble - 30s/40s Male Presenting. Any ethnicity. Vocal Range: B2-C5. A flamboyant Italian rival barber; a charlatan with a secret past.
