Breakdown
TO WEAR/BRING: All should wear dance clothing that does not cover up the body, bring character AND tap shoes.
FYI, Female dancers will wear flat tap shoes in the show as they play Chimney Sweeps in Step in Time along with the males.
MARY POPPINS: 25-35. Mezzo with Strong Top. As Jane and Michael’s new nanny, she is a dazzling personality and a force to be reckoned with. She is full of hope when things look bleak, and also inspires the Banks family to remember the need for compassion and appreciation through magic and common sense. Must be an excellent singer/actor. Must Dance very well / Musical Theatre style.
BERT: 30’s Baritone. A one-man-band, sidewalk artist, chimney sweep and kite salesman. Above all, he is a kind, encouraging, and awe-inspiring friend to Mary, Jane, and Michael. He also serves as a narrator to the story. Must be a strong actor. Must Dance extremely well / Musical Theatre/Tap styles (not afraid of heights).
GEORGE BANKS: Late 30’s to 45. Baritone. A bank manager and father to Jane and Michael. He tries to be a good provider for his family, but he is so wrapped up in his work and his image that he often forgets to be a good father and husband. Should be comfortable with movement.
WINIFRED BANKS: Late 30’s to 45. Mezzo. Jane and Michael’s loving yet distracted mother who is desperate to impress Mary and have her stay. She is a former actress who is very busy trying to live up to her husband’s societal and lifestyle expectations. Should be comfortable with movement
MRS. BRILL: 50’s Alto. The Bank’s direct and exasperated cook/housekeeper who rules the kitchen with an iron fist. Should be comfortable with movement.
ROBERTSON AY: 20’s to early 30’s. Tenor. The Bank’s clumsy, yet good-hearted footman who has a little trouble following directions. Should be comfortable with movement.
BIRD WOMAN: 45-60. Alto. The old, wizened, and solemn woman who sits outside St. Paula’s selling bags of crumbs for the pigeons. Her presence helps Mary teach the children to look past someone’s exterior in order to see their true beauty. Should be comfortable with movement.
MISS ANDREW: 40’s to early 50’s. Soprano with Alto Belt. George Bank’s formidable-looking childhood nanny. She is cruel, terrifying, and demanding. This role doubles as MISS SMYTHE and QUEEN VICTORIA. Should be comfortable with movement.
ADMIRAL BOOM / BANK CHAIRMAN: 50-60. Baritone. ADMIRAL BOOM: The Bank’s jolly and friendly neighbor whose house is shaped like a great ship. BANK CHAIRMAN: George’s intimidating, yet ultimately appreciative boss. Should be comfortable with movement.
