MARY JANE [Cast: Rachel McAdams]: Mid 30s-mid 40s. Any ethnicity. Single mother of a two-year old son with special needs. She has a genuine, easy cheer. It’s not forced or strained; she just has that gift. Inquisitive and open-hearted. She struggles to balance her job, her child’s care, and all the thousand other daily necessities without a robust support system, and she is often stretched quite thin.
RUTHIE/TENKEI [CAST]: 60s. Any ethnicity.
RUTHIE: A deadpan superintendent. Has lived a lot of life, and it has made her empathetic, but not sentimental. Competent and pragmatic.
TENKEI: A Buddhist nun. One of the hospital chaplains. Just what you’d hope – radiates calm, has a good sense of humor. A good listener.
SHERRY/DR. TOROS: 50s, BIPOC.
SHERRY: A nurse who has worked with MARY JANE and Alex in their home for over a year. Easy to be around. Warm, with a great sense of humor. Sees MARY JANE clearly and is constantly trying to take a little extra care of her, without ever condescending. Steady. Good company. Doesn’t suffer fools.
DR. TOROS: A pediatric intensivist. Overworked and approaching burnout. Doesn’t always have the time to be the doctor she would be if she worked in a more functional system, but has the emotional intelligence to do her best to slow down and be present when it’s needed. Chooses her words carefully to find the line between clarity and sensitivity.
BRIANNE/CHAYA [CAST]: 30s/40s. White.
BRIANNE: A new mother. From privilege/the corporate world. Overwhelmed by her baby’s diagnosis, but eager to absorb MARY JANE’s advice and wisdom on caring for a child with special needs. Trying very hard to focus on practicalities and keep her emotions in check.
CHAYA: A Hasidic woman. Mother of seven, one of whom is often in the hospital for long stretches. Clear-eyed and sardonic. Her candor is both funny and disarming. Prefers directness to euphemism; action to sympathy.
AMELIA/KAT: Early 20s. BIPOC.
AMELIA: SHERRY’s niece from Durham. A college student. A really nice kid; a bit outside the mainstream. Has the usual insecurities of a young woman this age, but a pretty healthy sense of self. Kind and curious and present.
KAT: A music therapist at the hospital. Kind. Sunny without being too perky. Would love to be able to do more than one person can. She shouldn’t be a total genius musician/singer. She should be more like a friend with a really nice voice. Skill on a musical instrument a plus, but not necessary.
