BREAKDOWN
Celebrated for her fierce guitar playing and swinging gospel music, singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe became a veritable legend. Throughout the 1930s and '40s, Sister Rosetta performed gospel in the morning and swing music at the Cotton Club at night, to inevitably become a major influence on rock 'n’ roll’s earliest icons. This “play with music” chronicles her first rehearsal with a young protégée, Marie Knight, as they prepare for a tour that would establish them as one of the great duet teams in musical history. MARIE AND ROSETTA’S COMPELLING LIFE STORIES COMBINED WITH ROOF-RAISING, HEART-RENDING GOSPEL SONGS SET THE STAGE FOR AN INSPIRING EVENING AT THE THEATRE.
SEEKING ACTORS WHO WILL COMMIT TO BOTH PRODUCTIONS OF THIS SHOW.
SEEKING:
Great actors who are amazing singers to play these complicated and dynamic women.
SISTER ROSETTA THARPE
Female, African-American, early 30s – early 50s. Pretty, vivacious, an irrepressible spirit. She has a bluesy voice (and in real life played a mean guitar). A diva who can take over a room vocally and with her personality. Plays spirituals that swing. MUST SING WELL AND IDEALLY HAVE SOME FAMILIARITY WITH PLAYING GUITAR, THOUGH NOT REQUIRED.
MARIE KNIGHT
Female, African-American, early 20s. A more traditional alto gospel singer (who in real life played staid piano). Gorgeous, youthful, on her way to becoming a spiritual star. Has to have a strong voice, a buoyancy of spirit, a sense of comedy one moment and then go to the other side. MUST HAVE A GOSPEL VOICE AND IDEALLY HAVE SOME FAMILIARITY WITH PLAYING PIANO, THOUGH NOT REQUIRED.
