BREAKDOWN

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Please slate your name first, scene second.

Please prepare a monologue and a song in the style of the show. You may also use the sides and accompaniment at www.artshhi.com/auditions . If your character has multiple songs available, please prepare two of the tracks.

SEEKING:

Actors of all abilities are encouraged to submit for all roles.

SEYMOUR - Male-identifying, any ethnicity. 25-35, a self-doubting, overworked florist clerk at Mushnik’s Flower Shop. He is a true outsider and misfit, radiating charming open-heartedness. He’s a struggling introvert who comes from poverty but has a hero’s heart and just wants to prove himself. Genuine and earnest and in spite of his flaws, he’s sweet and well-meaning. Good with physical comedy. HAS A STRONG SINGING VOICE. LEAD.

AUDREY - Female-identifying, any ethnicity. 25-35. Audrey works with Seymour at Mushnik’s Flower Shop and is the secret love of Seymour’s life. Sweet and vulnerable. However, her vulnerability should not feel weak, but ultimately a strength -- she's not a wilting flower, but she is eager to please. Lacking in education and self-esteem, she suffers from feelings of hopelessness at her current situation in life, including her abusive relationship, but she clings to her simple dreams to smile through the pain. Great Broadway/Rock belter with strong comedy skills. HAS A STRONG SINGING VOICE. LEAD.

THE URCHINS: CRYSTAL, RONNETTE, AND CHIFFON - 18-30. Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon are Street urchins, occasionally acting as the omniscient narrators/Greek Chorus of the story. Energetic, bold, and street-smart, these women are the only ones who have a grip on reality. Very tight harmonies. STRONG BELTERS AND MOVERS. LEADS. BIPOC actors are encouraged to submit for these roles.

ORIN - Male-identifying, any ethnicity. late 20s-early 40s. Audrey’s egotistical and abusive dentist boyfriend, Orin Scrivello is a motorcycle-riding, black leather-wearing tough guy. His smooth bad-boy charms let him get away with his incredibly sadistic and borderline sociopathic nature. His erratic emotions and manic tendencies are most likely due to inhaling nitrous oxide on a regular basis. HAS STRONG COMEDIC CHOPS. Will double as additional roles.

THE VOICE OF AUDREY II (The Plant) - Any gender. Any age 18+. Actor/vocalist located offstage. A wise-cracking, anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado with teeth, Audrey II is Seymour’s favorite and soon-to-be-famous plant he purchased from another flower shop during a mysterious total eclipse of the sun. But once the plant has the taste of human blood, its hunger can’t be satisfied. A devious, manipulative, power-hungry villain that will do anything for blood and ultimately world domination. Larger-than-life personality with a funky rhythm and blues voice. HAS A STRONG SINGING VOICE. Will double as additional roles. BIPOC actors are encouraged to submit.

MR./MRS. MUSHNIK - Any gender, any ethnicity. 50-65. Seymour’s boss. Owner of Mushnik’s Flower Shop, a failing business on Skid Row, Mushnik is given to cursing in Yiddish. MUSHNIK is a person who seldom smiles and often yells. Is not afraid to be manipulative and gluttonous when it comes to making a profit, and frequently takes advantage of Seymour.
