Breakdown

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

SULA
(20s) Female. Black Haitian. Exceptionally beautiful Haitian refugee who works as a nanny to care for her newborn son. She is wiser than her years, “of the earth”, and intelligent. Must be comfortable singing.

JOEL
(Early-mid 30s) Male. To play man of Black Haitian descent. The absent-minded but kind-hearted landlord. An optimistic man with “child-like” dreams. He is sensitive/emotional; falling in love and grieving with equal depth.

TOUSSAINT/MAN
(Early 30s) Black Haitian. Appears frequently in SULA’s dreams. Tall, dark, and sinister. Easily mistaken for the Haitian voodoo deity, Baron Samedi. Presence is palpable, especially in SULA’s dreams. Fills the space even before he has entered.

VISHAL (Mid/Late 20s) Black or multi-racial Trinidadian. Strong accent. Gay man who works as a prostitute. Speaks opening and freely about sex, sometimes to shock or illicit rise out of person with whom he is conversing. He is a complex combination of cynical and caring.

MADISON
(Early/Mid 30s) Woman of Black Haitian descent. SULA’s boss. Strong desire to reconnect, through SULA, with her lost Haitian heritage. Has dissatisfying and slightly contentious relationship with her husband on whom she has cheated.

TREVOR
(Mid 30s) Male, Caucasian. Has slightly contentious and dissatisfying relationship with his wife MADISON due to mutual distrust. Says that he wants what is best for his son, but makes choices that question this.

MANUEL
(50s/60s + to play 113 year old) Cuban. Voice of reason in nursing home who is on the cusp of death. Friendly and antagonistic with a dirty mouth, he enjoys Carolyn, his caretaker. Estranged from any remaining family.

The role of CAROLYN has been CAST.
