BREAKDOWN
STORY: A new music-theatre work that will open a window into legendary vocalist and jazz pianist Nat “King” Cole’s public and private personas, and examine the 1957 demise of his groundbreaking national television series and his complex relationship with America’s civil rights movement.
Dulé Hill is cast as Nat “King” Cole
Daniel J. Watts is cast as Sammy Davis Jr.
SEEKING:
BETTY HUTTON/ PEGGY LEE: 30- 35. Caucasian female. Brassy, comedian, playful and soulful singer. Also plays the stylish, romantic, self-assured Peggy Lee. Strong singer with a big belt.
CANDY: 40-50. Caucasian female. The mindful and sociable makeup artist. A tough easterner. Tough and no nonsense with a heart of gold. A strong singer.
EARTHA/ NATALIE: 25-30. Black/African American female. Elegant, savvy, sophisticated. Also plays 17-year old Natalie Cole. Sings “Unforgettable” with Nat. A strong singer.
PERLINA: 40-50. Black/ African-American female. Nat’s mother in memory. Placid, grounded and nurturing. A strong singer.
PRODUCER: 40- 55. Caucasian male. Charming. A wolf in sheep’s clothing. Predictable and steady under pressure. A strong singer.
STAGE MANAGER: 35-45. Caucasian male. Quick and direct. Edge and wit. First appears to be a bit of a jerk. Later becomes a valued ally. A strong singer.
BILLY: 18. Black/ African-American male. Youthful energy. Plays eleven-year old Billy Preston. Full of pluck and enjoyment. Sings “Blueberry Hill”.
