BREAKDOWN

LEMURIA

SYNOPSIS: Professor Anabelle Katz-Carver, the greatest primatologist since Jane Goodall, runs her elite research lab as a strict matriarchy. After grooming potential successors for decades, she's finally ready to choose an heir — but in the animal kingdom and in our own, how does a queen pass the crown on to another queen? LEMURIA is an inheritance comedy about dominance, queer Southern scientists, academic lineage, sex, and - yes - lemurs. A contemporary lemur-laced play inspired by Shakespeare’s KING LEAR.

NOTE: Performers with strong dance and/or stage combat backgrounds; physical and vocal playfulness and/or experience with puppetry, commedia, or clown are encouraged to audition.

SEEKING:

ANABELLE (Female, Mid 60s, White) Founder & LemurLab Director, raised in Asheville, NC. She is a matriarch. A scientist obsessed with the survival of the institution she’s built. A MacArthur Genius and the undisputed leader in her field: if you know anything about primatology, you know and respect her work. She is crisp, quippy, no-bullshit: a great diplomat, but only when required. A better mentor than mom. Still privately grieving the death of her adult daughter. She is anticipating, but not yet fully experiencing, the loss of her mind. She is our Lear (in a way).

REAGAN (Female, Mid 30s, Black) Co-Associate Director of LemurLab, raised in Charleston, SC. She is Miriam’s ex and rival. Anabelle’s protégé. A preacher’s kid and a brilliant researcher, she’s a misfit in her family. A fixer, a genius of code-switching, and a bit of an enigma (even to herself). She feels and loves deeply; she’s probably too good at compartmentalizing.

MIRIAM (Female, Mid 30s, Latina) Co-Associate Director of LemurLab, raised in Mexico City. She is Reagan’s ex and rival. Anabelle’s protégé. An atheist of Sephardic Jewish background, and a brilliant environmental educator, she’s a misfit in her family. At various points, struggling with and in recovery for alcoholism. A genius of code-switching. Uses brashness and humor as coping mechanisms; she’s probably too charming for her own good.

SEBASTIAN (Male, 18, Black/Latino/Asian/Pacific Islander/Indigenous/SWANA/MENASA) An intern at LemurLab, raised in Smithfield, NC. He has the energy of a Boy Scout or a community theater star in a whimsical coming-of-age drama. Helpful and hopeful. Working at LemurLab is his dream come true! Hiding deep fear under the brightest smile and a pair of Sparkly Converse. In a world of trombones, Sebastian is a piccolo.

NINA (Female, Early 30s, open ethnicity) Director of Primate Behavior & Enrichment at LemurLab, raised in Durham, NC. She briefly worked in financial risk assessment before returning to the LemurLab. Dependable, observant, quietly passionate. She was an intern tour-guide at the lab, not so long ago. Somewhere between Velma (from Scooby Doo) and Machiavelli, depending on who you ask. Doubles as CORDELIA (Female, open ethnicity) A dominant ring-tailed lemur; raised in captivity in the LemurLab. A real animal voiced by Anabelle’s auditory hallucinations. A chain-smoking Julie Andrews: cheeky, queenly, mercurial. Unafraid of impending death but intensely concerned with the future of her family. Lear’s Fool (in a way).

M (Non-binary, Early-Mid 20s, open ethnicity) PhD Candidate, raised all over Appalachia. They are cynical and sarcastic; an old soul with no patience for The Youths. Not even the usual intern coordinator, ok?! Slowly emerging from grief and depression; unsure of their path forward. Deep under their bone-dry sense of humor, vulnerable and golden-hearted. Obsessed with deep space and primate hibernation. Doubles as ROOMMATE (Non-Binary, Early-Mid 20s, open ethnicity) Reagan’s college roommate; the worst kind of Raised in Connecticut.
