LEMPICKA (Broadway)
NOTE: Fleeing the Russian revolution and leaving behind a world of opulence and wealth, aristocrat Tamara de Lempicka and her beloved husband Tadeusz are forced to make a new life. In the rising tide of fascism, Tamara takes to painting to survive, and when she meets the free-spirited Rafaela, a
prostitute on the fringes of Parisian society, she’s torn between the life she cherishes with her husband and the passion, ambition, and possibility awoken in her by her new muse. Inspired by the life of the artist who transformed herself from penniless refugee to star of the art world when the world itself teetered on chaos, “LEMPICKA” looks at the beauty and danger of one painter pursuing it all.
[THE BARONESS] Female, any ethnicity, 40s—50s. The Baron's wife, who is wealthy and posh, but with deep knowledge about the world, and insight into people. She is a woman of society, but her artifice breaks down towards the end of the musical when illness takes its toll. Doubles as other roles. Soprano.
[KIZETTE] Female, any ethnicity, teenager (ages from 4 to 16 over the course of the play). Tamara’s daughter. Trusting, caring, sensitive. Strong singer.
[SUZY SOLIDOR] Female, any ethnicity, 30s. Empowered. Saucy. Show-woman. The owner of an underground Parisian nightclub primarily for lesbian women. Her personality abounds as she tells patrons she has ‘dreadfully nice tits’ and walks around in gold lamé. Proud of what she’s built, outgoing, and lives for the erotic. Doubles as other roles.
[FEMALE ENSEMBLE] Female or non-binary, any ethnicity, 20s—40s. Thrilling pop voice with range. Athletic dance ability. To play multiple roles, such as guards, travelers, Parisians, Russian citizens, partygoers, police, artists, patrons, etc. Group numbers and solo singing. Seeking true triple threats.
