KAFKA'S QUEST is a quasi realistic play which imagines the family life of Gregor Samsa, the tragic hero of Kafka's METAMORPHOSIS, and his friendship with an historic Yiddish Theater actor and actress in 1912 Prague, prior to the events of the famed novella. It is a fantasy based on actual biographical events in Kafka's life. SEEKING: GREGOR SAMSA Who is Franz Kafka, late 20's (pushing 40), tall, dark, good looking, troubled and shy. HERMANN SAMSA Gregor's father, who is Hermann Kafka, 60's stern, authoritarian currently out of sorts due to bankruptcy. (Role CAST, but actors may be considered for possible replacement if needed) ITZHAK LOWY A Yiddish theater actor, who was a real person in Kafka's life and his friend. Late 20's, outgoing, 'actorly', full of life experiences, a 'macher', will do what it takes to keep himself and his theater going. MME. TRASSIK An actress in the Yiddish theater, a real person in Kafka's life, late 30's / early 40's. A Diva wanna-be, would like to be the Eleonora Duse or Sarah Bernhardt of the Yiddish theater. outgoing, dramatic, tragic and comedic. JULIE SAMSA Gregor's mother, who is Julie Kafka, late 50's, accommodating housewife out of her element due to bankruptcy and having to take in lodgers.(CAST) ELSIE the servant girl - the maid with an "edge," in awe of Gregor and the Samsa household. HERR ORDNUNG/HERR DAMSTAG the two lodgers, in their 40's, they operate and move in tandem, finish each other's sentences, inspect everything and take notes and their calling card reads "Department of Death Certification." Dressed in black with bowler hats they are the personification of sinister.
