The Irishtown players, a Dublin-based theatre company, have just started rehearsals for their new play, soon to open in New York. Aisling, the playwright, attempts to define Irishness through an exploration of sexual harassment. However, the actors decide it is neither Irish enough, nor sexy enough, to make it in the Big Apple. Irishtown is a wry, darkly comic exploration of the commercialization of a culture and the collapse of a collective.
SÍOFRA, 20s-early 30s, Up-and-coming actress (Cork). Charming; attractive; power hungry; self-absorbed.
QUIN, 30s, Actor (Dublin). Crass; blunt; witty; worried he’s on his way to becoming washed up.
CONSTANCE, 50s–70s, Actress (Wicklow). Caustic, dramatic, pragmatic, a wealth of theatre knowledge. Reckoning with her age. The most diplomatic of the lot.
AISLING, 30s, Playwright (Derry). Sensitive, defensive; considers herself a literary authority. Quick to anger; provokes fear in most of the cast. Dating SÍOFRA.
POPPY, 40s. Director (London). Annoyingly clever, according to the cast. Enamored of SÍOFRA. Never misses an opportunity to remind people of her directing resume. Over-eager; people-pleaser; exhibits nauseating displays of flattery.
