Equity actors/musicians for roles in IN THE POCKET (see breakdown).
Actors must be proficient with instruments, as described in role breakdown. Ability to play through key changes and to play solos preferred. Experience in musical theater is preferred but not mandatory. (Producer will provide an accompanist, keyboard, drums, and an amp for auditionees.)
IN THE POCKET celebrates the neo-soul music movement of the late 1990s in Atlanta.
We are seeking artists who can bring authenticity, musicality, and a deep connection to this spirited exploration of one of music's most emotive genres.
African American actors/musicians and Atlanta actors/musicians encouraged to attend.
All roles: Prepare one self-chosen contemporary dramatic monologue no more than 2 mins long and one self-chosen song in the style of neo-soul. Keyboard, drum set, and amp will be provided. All other instruments should be self-provided/brought to your audition. Cold read sides may be distributed to some actors at audition.
NOMADIC: 18, 23, and 43, Black woman. Vocalist with a Hip Hop flavor (think: '95 Lauryn Hill). Completely green but charismatic. A striver. She's the it girl with an X factor. (May audition with accompanist.)
KEYS: 23, 28, and 48, Black woman. Pianist/keyboardist. Thick. The most highly trained talent in the band. Her passion is often confused for animosity. (Must self-accompany at auditions.)
HARVEY: 32, 37, and 57 Black male. Bass guitar. Descendant of jazz royalty, he's a voice of reason, who brings a certain stability to the group. (Must play at auditions.)
FRISK: 25, 30, and 50, Black male. Saxophonist. The easygoing peacemaker...and a shameless flirt. (Must play at auditions.)
ALI ACE: 22, 27, and 47, Black male. Drummer. A skilled musician and de facto leader of the band. He brings a kinetic energy to every conversation and all his endeavors. (Must play at auditions.)
PRODUCER: 30s, Black woman. Dressed in production black. A wannabe documentary filmmaker creating reality tv fare. Though detail-oriented, there's a hidden sensuality underneath her Type A veneer. (Also plays AGENT LEE, a Drug Enforcement Administration investigator.)
