HOUSE OF TELESCOPES
SYNOPSIS:
Fable has buried herself in a historical opera she’s writing for lost trans-ancestors. Meanwhile, her
mother accidentally conjures a homesick demon, her best friend is addicted to martyrdom, and her
sister wants to fix everything yesterday.
FABLE - 30s, Transfemme Person of Color. In the impossible but common position of being a trans elder and possibility model even though she is only in her 30s. She’s asked constantly to care for those around her before caring for herself; she navigates between the world of her family of origin, the world of her queer family, and the spirit realm of trans people come, gone, and on their way. Musicologist and aspiring medium searching for trans ancestry and writing an opera in the moment before heading to grad school. Both vulnerable and straightforward.
SUZ - Late 20s, Cisgender. Femme. Poly and queer. Fable’s sister. The self-appointed peace-keeper of the family, who would like to fix everything.
TY - Late 20s to 30s, Queer. Dry wit and playful. A partner of Suz’s. Doubles as PHYLLIS EMSAssistant Instructor.
LILA - 30s, Non-binary. Tattoo artist. Self-assured joker. At once confident and frazzled, she contributes immense, unnoticed domestic labor. Unclear if chosen family conflict would ever resolve without her intervention. Ari’s partner. Suz’s college friend.
SHERMAN - 20s. White. Non-binary, “masc-ish”. The baby queer of the household. Just coming into themselves and struggling to name and analyze early experiences with transphobia, chosen family, and gender euphoria. Neurodivergent and nerds out/infodumps as a love language. Studying to be an EMT. Possibly in early stages of a medical transition, but this is never a subject of conversation or reveal. The text calls for a kiss with the actor playing Doobs.
DOOBS - 20s. Non-binary. Smooth despite social anxiety. Kind of a stoner. A performance artist. A sweetheart of Sherman’s. The text calls for a kiss with the actor playing Sherman.
JACKSON - 18+ (to play 17). He. Cis-assumed. Fable’s half-brother. A lacrosse jock. Struggling against internalized phobias to accept his sister’s transition and his own queer feelings.
DAPHNE - Late 50s. Cisgender. Fable’s mother. Deeply caring but struggling to understand and accept Fable’s transition. Unraveling.
GUS - Late 50s. Cisgender. Fable’s stepdad. Works on a gas rig. A good listener. Doubles as CHRIS, an EMS Substitute Instructor who makes a transphobic statement in Sherman’s class.
ARI - 40s. Butch lesbian or non-binary. Black. A carpenter. Owns the house that Fable, Lila andSherman live in and operates as the dad of the household. Doubles as YOSEF, an EMS instructor.
CARTOGRAPHERS [5] - A multigenerational group of gender plural predecessors. These individuals could identify as trans, non-binary, gender-nonconforming, gender-fluid, or any number of other genders that we have not named. Each of the cartographers has their own unique personality full of equal parts weight, queer magic, and sass. They watch over Fable. These performers will double as students in an EMT class.
SAVED THINGS - A physical performer and singer who will operate a wearable puppet full of loved objects from a past life. A well-meaning trickster.
