Breakdown
At the mouth of the Mississippi River, Shelah’s family and friends have come to celebrate her birthday, but unbeknownst to all of them, the world as they know it is about to completely change. In this contemporary parable inspired by the Book of Job, unexpected events turn the reunion into the ultimate test of faith and love. As her world literally and figuratively begins to collapse around her, Shelah must fight to survive the rising flood of life’s greatest challenges, as the deluge threatens to wash away everything she holds dear.
SEEKING:
MAE:
60s. Female. African-American. Lifelong friend of Shelah’s. The life of the party. Vivacious and fun-loving. Loves her liquor. A bit of a flirt and not afraid to get a little silly. She can give back as good as she gets. A role for an actress with both comedic and dramatic skills.
DR. ANDERSON:
60s. Male. Caucasian. He has been the family doctor for decades, and at this point is more family than doctor. If he were not a doctor, he could have as easily been a poet. Trustworthy, thoughtful, with a rough-hewn sensibility. Plain-spoken and sincere, he’s not afraid to speak frankly and to the point.
CREAKER:
50s. Male. African-American. A handyman who works on the property. Short-tempered, gruff, brusque, no nonsense. Underneath his rough exterior is a good heart, but he only allows himself to soften and open up after he’s had a few drinks. Wants to be a good father to his son, but his attempts to mold and focus him often devolve into bouts of brutal criticism.

The following roles have been CAST.
Seeking for future repalcements and understudies only
SHELAH:
ROLE CAST. 60s. Female. African-American. The matriarch and center of the family. Loves her children. Proud. Steady, constant, grounded, devout, but tormented by her past and enduring a great test. [CAST]
COOKIE:
ROLE CAST. Mid-late 30s. Female. African-American. Step-daughter to Shelah. Years of past trauma have left her bitter and filled with rage. Has turned to alcohol and drugs to numb the internal pain that’s tearing her apart inside. Tough, fierce, wild, but getting tired of fighting. To her, the idea of trusting anyone is impossible. Everyone is a danger, and keeping her distance is the only way to survive. [CAST]
AUBREY:
ROLE CAST. Mid-late 30s. Male. African-American. Son to Shelah. Confident, independent, and self-sufficient. He’s a take charge kind of person, and likes to confront and solve problems head-on—though sometimes his assertive forcefulness can make him seem a bit like a steam roller. Holds himself and others to a high standard, which makes it difficult at times for him to see things from all angles. [CAST]
SPENCER:
ROLE CAST. Late 30s. Male. African-American. Son to Shelah. Outspoken, charismatic, with a candid and forthright sense of humor. A big personality and a big talker. Well-intentioned and eager to take matters into his own hands, but sometimes lacks the organization and focus to follow through. [CAST]
CRIER:
ROLE CAST. Early 20s. Male. African-American. Son to Creaker. Has a beautiful singing voice and harbors dreams of being a singer. Sweet, earnest, eager. Sensitive. Has taken a job with his father working at Shelah’s house, but his heart isn’t in it. He feels stifled by his father and the smallness of the world around him. Harbors dreams of being a singer. Feels his father’s criticism deeply and resents that his father can only seem to show him affection when he’s drunk. [CAST]
