BREAKDOWN

HAVE YOU MET JANE GOODALL AND HER MOTHER?

A new comedy by Michael Walek. The Tanzanian government allowed Jane Goodall to study chimpanzees in the wild under one condition - she must bring a chaperone. So, Jane invited her mother.

CASTING NOTE: Have You Met Jane Goodall and Her Mother? is not a naturalistic play - it's more Noel Coward than Merchant Ivory (but no accents!). The Actors shift between presenting the story to the audience and embodying the characters, but it never becomes fully representational. Performers need to be comfortable with rapid tone shifts and with handling direct address playfully.

[SHORT] Character is male (cisgender, transgender, or nonbinary) 20-30, The most charming person you’ve ever met. Headstrong, dominating, a man who can build you a house with a pocketknife. His bravado hides a romantic heart. Queer.

[DAVID] Character is male (cisgender, transgender, or nonbinary) 30-50, An uptight British colonial officer. He is funny, but it comes from a well of deep pain. A man who has never been comfortable in his body one day of his life. Queer.

[JANE] CAST Character is female (cisgender, transgender, or nonbinary) 25, bright, determined, funny. A comedienne. She is almost too charming for her own good.

[VANNE] CAST Character is female (cisgender, transgender, or nonbinary) 50s, a wry sense of humor. A keen intelligence. She is the kind of woman you would want around in a crisis.

[ADOLF/MOSES] CAST Character is male (cisgender, transgender, or nonbinary) 19, young, motivated, full of energy and life. He is deeply political and has done the reading to back it up. His energy and eagerness hides a shrewdness most people can’t recognize. Queer.
