GHETTO GODS IN DIVINELAND
SYNOPSIS: Set to the vibe, energy, and music of Trenton's own Poor Righteous Teachers, GHETTO GODS IN DIVINELAND tells the story of the unheard community of Divineland and how far its residents will go for representation and reclamation of their resources.
Non-binary Actors are encouraged to audition for the roles of Papi Shh and the Ghetto Gods.
For all characters (especially Ghetto Gods 1 & 2): proficiency with vocal rhythms aka rapping is highly recommended. Likewise, experience with Hip Hop dance styles is also recommended but not required.
Gekiyla (Black - Female - mid/late 20s) A horticulturist with a penchant for urban foraging. Within the last few years she has moved back to her old neighborhood in Divineland, Trenton, NJ with hopes to bring sustainable, healthy food options to her community. While some are quick to action, she is more the study, observe, and plan type. She journals, sometimes in rhyme. She believes in the power of her people.
Ameen (Black - Male - mid/early 20s) Geikyla's younger brother. Pro-black, prideful and passionate. Will try to play it cool but in actuality is all gas no breaks. Has short patience for nonsense and desperately wants a better situation for himself and his community, by any means. Lived in Divineland, Trenton, NJ all his life.
Papi Shh (Indigenous, Black, Latinx, or Non-White Immigrant - Any Gender - should look young but is older than America) Gekiyla and Ameen's childhood/lifelong friend, a hood spiritualist, a lover of music, energetic, all about the positive vibes but also will keep it real.
Ghetto God 1 (Black, Black Caribbean, African, or Latinx - Any Gender - 30s or older preferred) Will portray a variety of smaller roles in the play but is primarily a narrator and resident of Divineland aka Mayor Donnely Project Homes in Trenton, NJ. Casual Christian. Magic.
Ghetto God 2 (Black - Any Gender - 30s or older preferred) Will portray a variety of smaller roles in the play but is primarily a narrator and resident of Divineland aka Mayor Donnely Project Homes in Trenton, NJ. Member of the 5-percent nation. Magic.
