Bessie Delany (101) Female presenting. Bessie is the third of the 10 Delaney children. A retired dentist, Bessie is an outspoken and emotional, yet strong woman. She is sweet and charming but expresses her point clearly and concisely and does not back down from any challenge or confrontation. Her darker skin has presented difficulties in her life that her lighter skinned sister and mother had to endure but even in the face of the violence and persecution, she has found a way to laugh and love and enjoy life. Though this is true, Bessie makes no apologies for the anger she feels towards the racism she has endured in her life and can still get emotional upon recounting it. It is believed that Bessie has “psychic powers.”
Sadie Delany (103) Female presenting. A retired teacher, the first African American teacher in the NY City School System, Sadie Delaney is the second of the 10 Delaney children. She is a sweet, agreeable, relatively calm woman with a deep connection to her mother. While her sister is a fighter, she is a survivor – one who chooses the path of least resistance and thus can be a little manipulative in an innocent way. She is not as sure of herself as her sister is, is shy and can be jittery and afraid of men in particular. This does not mean that she does not stand up for herself or for what she believes in, but will avoid confrontation until it becomes impossible to, and when she does – she does it with command and power. As the years go on, Sadie becomes the matron of the family, making all of the decisions for the remaining Delaney child.
