Please prepare a contemporary monologue (no longer than 90 seconds) and up to 1-minute of a contemporary musical theater song of your choice. BREAKDOWN
FUN HOME: Musical inspired by Alison Bechdel's 2006 graphic memoir.
Setting: Beech Creek, Pa, 1970s; Oberlin College, 1980s; New York, Present Day.
SEEKING:
ALISON – 43 years old, a cartoonist. Precise, wry, talented. Trying to keep distance between herself and the memories she is writing about. Range: low E to light belt C sharp.
MEDIUM ALISON – 19 years old, a college freshman. She’s smart and awkward. Exploring her sexuality and the world beyond Beech Creek. Strong mix-belt to C and mix to E.
SMALL ALISON – Around 9 years old. Just starting to figure out what’s really going on in her home. Range: B to B.
BRUCE BECHDEL – Alison’s father. Brilliant, deceitful, hard to know; trapped in a life that does not suit him yet unsure about how to leave it. Range: B to G.
HELEN BECHDEL – Alison’s mother. A gifted pianist and actress. Helen sees everything her husband does and (usually) chooses to say nothing. A flat to strong mixed E.
CHRISTIAN BECHDEL – Alison’s brother, around 10 years old. Any vocal range.
JOHN BECHDEL – Alison’s brother, around 6 years old. Any vocal range.
ROY – A young man Bruce hires to do yard work. Any vocal range.
JOAN – A college student. Alison’s funny, perceptive first girlfriend. Range: Alto.
