BRUCE: 40 – 50’S
Alison’s Father. Closeted gay man, high-school English teacher, funeral home director, charming, charismatic with flashes of rage, complex man whose passion is historic home restoration – creating a surface image of perfection; Strong vocalist.

HELEN: LATE 30’S – LATE 40’S
Alison’s mother; smart, talented pianist and actor, exhausted by the weight of tip toeing around her husband’s temper and erratic behavior, she maintains the façade Bruce works so hard to preserve – until she doesn’t. A loving mother clinging to the illusion for fear of everything fracturing. Strong vocalist.

ALISON 30 – EARLY 40’s
Narrator; a cartoonist, funny, wry, searching for understanding. Grown woman in search of the truth, comfortable in her skin, but trying to connect the fragments of her father’s life and choices in connection with her own. Strong vocalist.

MEDIUM ALISON: Late Teens – early 20’s
A freshman in College, awkward – just beginning to define herself outside of the context of who others want her to be. She is discovering her voice, her style, her sexuality and her truth. Bright, nerdy, but unfiltered and brimming with possibility. Strong vocalist.

SMALL ALISON: 8 – 10
Alison Bechdel as a child; a tomboy, smart, confident, precocious, opinionated, full of energy and has a special connection with her dad. Strong vocalist.

JOAN: Late Teens – early 20’s
A college student, cool, edgy, smart, confident, an activist in the exuberant early 20’s change the world kind of way. An out and proud lesbian, she helps Medium Alison on her path of self-discovery. Strong vocalist.

ROY/PETE/MARK/BOBBY/JEREMY: Late Teens – early 20’s
Roy, a handsome, buff young man Bruce hires to do yard work and part time babysitter for the children, shares some level of attraction with Bruce; Mark, an all American high school junior that Bruce tries to pick up; Pete, a client for the funeral home; Bobby Jeremy, singer in small Alison’s imaginary band. Strong vocalist.
