TREE (she/her, Black. 18). ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Smart and headstrong, Tree had to grow up faster than other kids her age. With a parent in prison, she is faced with the seemingly impossible task of raising an 11-year-old brother and navigating real world struggles, often at the expense of getting to grow up as a ‘normal teenager’. Tree will do whatever it takes to keep her younger brother safe. This character has a strong sense of self and a sharp tongue that gets her into trouble.
JASMINE HARRIS (she/her, Black. 40s). Teacher of 10 years. Once an idealistic newbie and staunch advocate for her students, Harris is now returning to the school where she once worked. With a number of disappointing teaching experiences under her belt, Jasmine has become worn down by the glaring pitfalls of the public school system. Her new “let it go” philosophy mitigates her frustration at the addition of a new charter school in the building. She is opinionated and tough with a strong moral compass.
LaRONDA + as cast (she/her, Black. 18+ to play 17-18 y.o.). Tree’s childhood best friend. LaRonda has been plucked from the local public school and moved up into the new fancy charter high school. Despite her mother’s hopes that she succeeds, Laronda struggles to keep up with the demands of a new school. Perhaps not a naturally gifted student, and she struggles with how that is perceived, but she is smart enough to pick up on the teachers' testing strategies. Was able to slide by when she was
at the regular public school, but no longer has that luxury. Her struggling in the charter school is also a source of shame for her. An emotional ping-pong, she can switch on a dime.
NABILA MUHAMMAD, LAKKAYYAH + as cast (she/her, 18+ to play 17/mid-30s) AS NABILA: 35 years old. A career teacher. Grounded, logical, understanding. Nabila has been teaching at the school for many years now and has developed an intimate understanding of how things work. Although she yearns for better opportunities and facilities for her students, Nabila’s calm and cool demeanor makes her the perfect confidante and friend to Ms. Harris throughout the school year. AS LAKKAYYAH: A 17- year-old High School senior. Typical teenager and student at Peak & Pinnacle Academy. Self-aware. The bridge in the friend group. Always filling in the blanks of who’s who and who-knows-who.
ZAY (he/him, Black. 11 years old. Juvenile actors encouraged to audition). Silly, chock full of energy, and loves to give his sister a hard time. At times, Zay’s goofiness and lack of awareness in the world makes him feel young for his age. Maybe it’s because of his mom not being around anymore, maybe it is his asthma.
TIGHMAN/LaNEEYAH + as cast (she/her, 18+ to play 17/mid-20s) AS TIGHMAN: Mid 20s. A young, new, idealistic teacher at Peak & Pinnacle Academy. Tighman is polite, but her sole focus on the charter students renders her clueless when it comes to the needs of the public-school staff. Maybe a little naive, Tighman believes that she can change the world. Not yet jaded by life’s experiences. AS LANEEYAH: 17 years old. Typical teenager and student at Peak & Pinnacle Academy. Off on her own world. Self-directed. Didn’t grow up with this friend group, so isn’t aware of the historical friend groups and dynamics. Because of this, LaNeeyah is freer.
NADEEM/ANTHONY + as cast (he/him, Black. 18+ to play 17-18 y.o.) AS NADEEM: A young man in a hurry to graduate! Nadeem is unaware of the ways that the system has failed him and hasn’t offered him access the resources he needs to succeed. He takes his work seriously and cares about doing a good job. Maybe even comically so.
