Male. 30s-40. Baritone. A Northern Jewish man who runs the National Pencil Factory and is falsely accused of the rape and murder of Mary Phagan. Quiet, introverted, out of place in the South. Deeply feeling with a wide emotional range and intense vulnerability. Brilliant, versatile actor with strong presence.
LUCILLE FRANK:
Female. 25-35. Mezzo w/ strong high belt/mix. Leo’s Southern-Jewish wife. Passionate, driven, loving and loyal. A woman of strength and confidence, devoted to her proving her husband’s innocence. Star presence with wide emotional range and physical command.
HUGH DORSEY:
Male. 30-50. Baritone. Prosecuting attorney. An intense, politically motivated man.
GOVERNOR JACK SLATON / MR. PEAVY / BRITT CRAIG:
Male. 30s-40s. Baritone (with high F). Slaton - Governor of Georgia who pardons Leo Frank. Must be a great mover; ballroom dance/partnering skills. Peavy - Guards Leo Frank’s cell in Milledgeville. Craig – A charming, drunken journalist for the Atlanta Georgian whose career is revived by the trial. Must be able to move.
FRANKIE EPPS / YOUNG SOLDIER:
Male. 16-18. Tenor. Frankie - Mary’s friend and love interest. Perky, fun loving and very charming. Solider - A young confederate soldier about to go off to war. Powerful contemporary tenor.
MARY PHAGAN:
Female. 13-20. Mezzo. Young employee who is killed at the National Pencil Factory. No taller than 5’4”.
OLD SOLDIER / JUDGE ROAN/GUARD:
Male. 45-75. Baritone. Soldier – An older version of the young soldier, but he now has lost his leg. Roan – The sickly judge presiding over Leo’s trial.
TOM WATSON / DETECTIVE STARNES:
Male. 30s-50s. Tenor. Watson – Journalist, racist, zealot, editor of the Jeffersonian. Starnes – The arresting officer following the murder of Mary Phagan. Strong character actor.
MINNIE MCKNIGHT / ANGELA:
African-American female. 20s-40s. Mezzo Soprano. Minnie – Cook and servant of the Franks’ who gives damning testimony at the trial. Angela – House maid of Governor Slaton. Excellent, versatile actress. Must move well.
LUTHER ROSSER/ OFFICER IVY/GUARD:
Male. 20s-50s. Baritone. Rosser - Leo Frank’s unkempt lawyer, comes off as distracted and inefficient. Ivy - Police officer assigned to the case.
JIM CONLEY/NEWT LEE/RILEY:
African-American male. 30s-50s. Tenor. Jim - Janitor who works for Leo at the National Pencil Factory. A master manipulator and showman. Tells a very colorful story. Newt – Night watchman at the National Pencil Factory. Finds Mary Phagan’s body. Riley – House servant at Governor Slaton’s mansion. Excellent dramatic actor. An excellent actor with many colors and a strong commanding presence. Should move well.
MRS. PHAGAN / SALLY SLATON:
Female. 30-50. Soprano. Mrs. Phagan - Mother of Mary Phagan who testifies at the trial. Excellent dramatic actress with wide emotional range. Sally – Wife of Governor Slaton, elegant and refined. Partner/Ballroom dancing.

Female. 35-55. Alto. Owner and operator of The Chicken Ranch. A smart businesswoman who also plays housemother to the girls. She is a charming, attractive, and well-kept Madam with a heart of gold who really has a deep compassion for her girls and truly desires more to life underneath it all.
SHERIFF ED EARL DODD:
Male. 35-55. Baritone. He’s a down to earth good ol’ boy that is naïve to the power of the media. Loyal and fiercely protective to a fault who can tend to shoot off his mouth and gun before thinking, often landing him in the hot seat.
JEWEL:
Female. 30-55. Mezzo. Housekeeper at The Chicken Ranch. Miss Mona’s confidante. She’s a sassy yet respectful true mother hen of the bunch. A powerful southern style blues/rock singer.
MELVIN P. THORPE:
Male. 30-55. Baritone. Believes he is a newsman first and foremost who thrives on sensationalistic news stories that he can turn into a spectacular theatrical event.
C.J. SCRUGGS / GOVERNOR OF TEXAS:
Male. 35-65. Baritone. Scruggs – A local insurance agent and president of the local Jaycees. Confident sidekick to Mayor Poindexter. The outspoken type to interject his thoughts on how the town should be run. Governor – A true Texas politician with a brilliant knack to sidestep all of the important issues.
ANGEL:
Female. 22-35. Mezzo. A hardened city streetwalker on the outside, she also has a young son, which exposes her vulnerable maternal nature and strong drive to want to better herself and her situation.
SHY:
Female. 18-27. Mezzo. An inexperienced, gawky farm girl who arrives at The Chicken Ranch after running away from home. Starts as a shy and inexperienced young girl and eventually becomes an optimistic and self-confident woman.
SENATOR WINGWOAH / MAYOR RUFUS POINDEXTER:
Male. 35-65. Senator – President of the Aggies Alumni Association. A family man who is a servant of the people and patron of The Chicken Ranch. Mayor – A local car salesman and mayor of the town. Likely never imagined he’d really have to make any responsible decisions or deal with a high profile issue.
DOATSEY MAE:
Female. 30-55. Alto. Highly intelligent, wisecracking waitress at the Texas Twinkle Cafe. Has no faith in the local businessmen or sheriff to handle the issues at hand. Afraid to reveal her secret dreams to the rest of the world.
THE BANDLEADER / EDSEL MACKEY:
Male. 25-55. Baritone. Bandleader - Opens the show and is the occasional narrator of the story. Think “Prairie Home Companion” Mackey – The Country editor of the town newspaper. Educated with a liberal streak. Conforms to the local way of thinking as to not rock the boat too much.

SAM WHEAT:
Male. Late 20s to early 30s. Pop/Rock Baritenor. Sam is the hero of our story living in New York City with his long-term girlfriend, Molly. A strong and confident businessman, he has difficulty with the emotional, soulful side of love. His greatest obstacle is his fear of commitment. He fears that when he gets the things he wants in life, he will lose them. One day Sam is murdered by Willie Lopez and finds himself caught between worlds. When he finds out that Molly is in danger, he seeks to somehow protect her. He ultimately saves Molly and expresses his love for her, prior to his transfiguration into another realm. Should move well for physical theatre transitions, character movements, and illusions. Guitar skills a plus. Vocal Range: G2-Bb4
MOLLY JENSEN:
Female. Late 20s to early 30s. Excellent singer. Mezzo; strong belt/mix and strong head voice. Molly is an artist living in New York City with her boyfriend, Sam Wheat. Molly has an optimistic view on life and truly lives in the moment. In her relationship with Sam, she understands that a declaration of love requires vulnerability and surrender, but that is too great for him. When Sam is killed, she loses all of her zest for life and becomes a prisoner of her emotions. She struggles when she is asked to believe, through Oda Mae, that Sam’s ghost is with her and awakens to believe in something that is beyond this world. Vocal Range: G3-F5
ODA MAE BROWN:
African-American. Female. 20s-30s. Mezzo. Oda Mae Brown works as a medium and spiritual advisor out of a storefront in Brooklyn. A smart woman, she supports her entire family through her scam – talking to the dearly departed. Though she was told as a child that she had "the gift" by her mother and grandmother (who were both able to communicate with the dead), Oda Mae did not actually experience communication with the spirits until she encounters Sam Wheat during a spiritual session with another client. Through her encounter with the ghost of Sam, she ultimately is moved as much by Sam and Molly’s love as she is by the power to really talk to the other side. She is larger than life. Seeking an actress with strong comedic skills based in sincerity and truth. Some dancing required. Vocal Range: A3-E5
CARL BRUNER:
Male. 30s. Best friend of Sam Wheat. Carl desperately wants everything Sam has – including Molly. He has great passion for the things of life, which leads him to some suspicious business dealings involving Sam’s business accounts. He is not necessarily a bad guy at heart, just stuck in the material. After Carl hires Willie Lopez to mug Sam and Sam is killed, Carl really loses his grip and slides over to the dark side. Some physical theatre work needed for transitions.

SUBWAY GHOST / ORLANDO JONES / ENSEMBLE:
Male. 20s-30s. Strong spoken word/rap skills required. The Subway Ghost helps and teaches Sam to use his otherworldly powers. Aggressive and spooky, but within the realm of truthfulness. Good physical actor required with strong movement skills and athleticism.
WILLIE LOPEZ / ENSEMBLE:
Male. 20s-40s. Willie is hired to mug Sam. This results in a fight, and Sam is killed. Extremely masculine, tough and intimidating. Strong movement skills and athleticism needed.
CLARA / ORTISHA JONES / FIRST NUN / ENSEMBLE:
Female. 20s-40s. AMAZING VOCALIST. Oda Mae’s sister and helper in her scam of speaking to the dearly departed. Strong comedic skills. Will also double in other roles. Vocal Range: D to D. Strong movement skills and athleticism needed. Range: B3-D5

PATSY CLINE:
20-30 Down to earth off-stage, when she hits the stage she moves effortlessly from a ballad that reveals the pain in her soul to a rip-roaring country tune that brings done the house. Dynamic and passionate actress who can embody the legendary country singer in voice and spirit. Ability to embody her unique musical style is more important than an exact imitation, but the ability to do both is even better.
LOUISE SEGER:
40-60. A Texas housewife and fan of Patsy Cline. Bossy, determined, gregarious, loves life and people but does not suffer fools, has a no-nonsense attitude and a tremendous heart of gold. Comedic actress comfortable with direct interaction with the audience. She leads us through the show and must be able to adjust/respond with excitement and humor to the varied audience’s reactions each performance.
