BREAKDOWN
Join us as we bid farewell to a beloved member of the Primary Stages family and one of the most prolific playwrights of the 20th century with Final Follies, a uniquely curated selection of three one-act plays by master writer A.R. GURNEY. The plays specifically chosen for this special engagement include: The Love Course, an observation of the culminating meeting of an undergraduate romantic literature course, co-taught by two of academia’s most eccentric professors; The Rape of Bunny Stuntz, an enigmatic story of an overburdened woman anxiously trying to keep her personal life from the throes of chaos while leading a rowdy community meeting; and the titular Final Follies, where a forlorn Manhattanite searching for the key to adulthood in the most truly, and literally, adult place imaginable. The production will celebrate the universality and unique timelessness of one of America's favorite playwright.
NOTE – WE ARE ACTIVELY SEEKING ALL ETHNICITIES. WE ARE PUTTING TOGETHER A COMPANY OF 7 ACTORS WHO WILL PLAY THE FOLLOWING ROLES. THERE WILL BE SOME DOUBLING OF ROLES TO BE DETERMINED BY THE ACTORS WHO ARE CAST. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE HAVE AN ETHNICALLY DIVERSE CAST.
All actors must have strong language skills and a great sense of humor.
SEEKING:
BUNNY STUNTZ (Female, late 20s-50) in The Rape of Bunny Stuntz. She is a bright, efficient, and compelling woman. She is often cheery, and has a strong, independent vibe that pushes her into a leadership position. Toward the end she gets to be cold and severe when she decides to tell the truth and leave with the man. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
WILMA TRUMBO (Female, late 20s-50) in The Rape of Bunny Stuntz. Open ethnicity. She is younger than Bunny. She stands in stark contrast to the composed and polished Bunny in both presence and attitude. She has a rumpled appearance and has a naïve wide-eyed stance. She is well meaning but is very quick to get men or the police for help. When Bunny asks her to run the meeting she obliges but is timid. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
HOWIE HALE (Male, late 20s-50) in The Rape of Bunny Stuntz. Open ethnicity. He is efficient and likes to have a good time. He tries to be helpful in the disastrous community meeting but ends up leading the party. He is not as “on the ball” as Bunny would like him. He wears a suit or sports jacket. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
SALLY (Female, 20s-30s) in The Love Course. Open ethnicity. A student of literature. She is passionate about the concept of love, as well as very loyal to Professor Carroway. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
MIKE (Male, 20s-30s) in The Love Course. Open ethnicity. An electrical engineer. Has never been in this type of class before. Romantically involved with Sally. The professors use him as a messenger and Sally uses him as a faux student when Professor Carroway asks her to teach the class. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
PROFESSOR CARROWAY (Female, 40s-50s) in The Love Course. “A woman of a certain age” who is professor of romantic literature at a large university. She is very passionate in what she believes in and is seen as eccentric and theatrical by her colleagues. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
PROFESSOR BURGESS (Male, mid 40s-50s) in The Love Course. About the same age as Professor Carroway. He is a professor of romantic literature at the same university. His focus is more in Plato and Socrates and less in Hemingway and Shakespeare. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
TANISHA (Female, 30s) in Final Follies. African American. Casting Director at a video studio. An elegant and good-looking woman. Dresses in simple business clothes. She runs an adult movie producing company. She believes it is therapeutic content. She is all business and tries to not fall for Nelson. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
WALTER (Male, mid 40s-50s) in Final Follies. He is Nelson’s older brother. He is well tailored and seems to always be in a rush. He is a devout church goer and works for his grandfather. Sets his brother up for failure when he reveals Nelson’s new career to their grandfather to get more money for himself. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
GRANDFATHER (Male, 80s) in Final Follies. A retired businessman. Walter and Nelson’s grandfather. Loves his grandsons, but believes it is his duty to protect the community from Nelson. A strong patriarch of a very WASP-y family. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
NELSON (Male, 40s) in Final Follies. A former 10th grade English teacher at an Upper West Side private school who is now a man without a career. He’s a good-looking guy in his early middle age. Has had a string of ultimately unsuccessful careers. He is well dressed yet looks slightly out of date and has trouble maintaining order. He has always wanted to be an actor and is desperate for money and a purpose in life so responds to an ad for adult movies. He finds a transformative kind of success and fulfillment in adult films and also through working with Tanisha. Must have strong language skills and a great sense of a humor.
