BREAKDOWN

EL ORTO OZ

SEEKING:

[DORA] Female, 18 and up to play 15, Latine. A Mexican American girl, who has grown up with Chicago as her hometown. Today is her 15th birthday. She struggles to embrace her heritage as she navigates her own life in America. Doubles as: TAQUITO, a hand-held puppet. G3 - Ab5 (Musical Theatre/Pop Soprano belt)

[CHELO & OTHERS] Male, 20s – 30s, Latine. One of Dora’s three uncles. A Latine immigrant, now living in Chicago. He struggles with English. Doubles as: CHICO and THE SCARECROW, the first of Dora’s friends she makes on El Camino Amarillo. He is a literal scarecrow who has been stuffed with the pages of a Spanish to English dictionary, so he mixes up his words. A2 - A4 (Pop Baritenor)

[CHAPARRO & OTHERS] Male, 20s – 30s, Latine. One of Dora’s three uncles. A Latine immigrant, now living in Chicago. He struggles with fear. Doubles as: PICO, CUERVO UNO, and THE MOUNTAIN LION, a fearful vegetarian puma who is an outcast in his own pack. F#3 - D5 (Pop/Folk Tenor)

[TINO & OTHERS] Male, 20s – 30s, Latine. One of Dora’s three uncles. A Latine immigrant, now living in Chicago. He loves to cook. Doubles as: RICO, CUERVO DOS, and THE IRON CHEF, the second of Dora’s friends she makes on El Camino Amarillo. He is an Iron Chef in that he is literally made of pots and pans. He’s a one-man taco stand, but his food is lousy. If only he could cook with his heart. B2 - C5 (Legit/Pop Tenor)

[MOTHER & OTHERS] Female, 20s – 30s, Latine. Dora’s mother. She is a single mother, and an immigrant, living in Chicago. She wants her Mexican American daughter, who was born in the U.S., to grow up with an appreciation for what Mexican culture has meant to her life. Doubles as: CARNIVAL GLORIA, THE SOLDADO, THE WIZARD (LA DIVA DEL OZ - the diva to beat all other divas). A3 - F5 (Musical Theatre/Pop Mezzo)

[LA CUARANDERA] Female, 20s – 30s, Latine. The neighborhood curandera is a woman who is perhaps prescient but seems to hold a mysterious power. She seems to have a tenuous relationship with the rest of the neighborhood, but she is deeply connected to her heritage. It isn’t clear if she is malevolent or not—at least at the beginning. She is responsible for conjuring the tornado that whisks Dora away to Oz. Doubles as: THE BOUNCER AND LA BRUJA, who represents the old country. She is a powerful Bruja who wants to steal the magic Dora has in her heart. Has a pair of magical castanets that are the source of her power, but with the ruby zapatillos, she would be unstoppable. F#3 - F#5 (Musical Theatre Soprano Belter)
