BREAKDOWN

JONATHAN / ENSEMBLE: Jewish, American, 20s; a young writer. Jonathan travels to Ukraine in order to research his grandfather's life and to find his hometown, Trachimbrod, and a woman named Augustine, who saved his grandfather from the Nazis.

ALEX / ENSEMBLE: Ukrainian, 20s; Jonathan's guide in Ukraine. Alex writes and speaks in charmingly butchered English. He writes chapters for Jonathan's book and sends them to him. Alex has an abusive father and dreams of a better life in America for his younger brother and himself.

GRANDFATHER / ENSEMBLE: Ukrainian, 50s-60s; Alex's grandfather, and the driver for Jonathan's trip. He has been depressed and temperamental ever since his wife's death from brain cancer two years earlier, and tormented by his memories of the war. He claims he is blind, and he has a seeing-eye dog named Sammy Davis, Jr., Jr.

BROD / ENSEMBLE: 20s; Jonathan's great-great-great-great-great-grandmother. She is the baby who emerges from the wreckage of Trachim B's wagon. She is brilliant and grows up in a loving home but struggles to make sense of a world so cruel as to render itself meaningless.

LISTA / ENSEMBLE: 50s-60s; She is the last remaining survivor of Trachimbrod. She preserves and protects all the objects that are left from the shtetl after it was destroyed by the Nazis. When Alex, Jonathan, and Grandfather first meet her, they think she is Augustine.

In addition, all five actors will play a multitude of roles, as the play is envisioned to be told by a virtuosic, tight-knit ensemble.

Unless textually specified, all roles are open to actors of all races, ethnicities, genders and abilities, and actors of all identities are strongly encouraged to audition.
