Breakdown

EVERYONE IN THIS ENSEMBLE HAS TO MOVE REALLY WELL.
Some of the ensemble and a few of the men need to be strong dancers as well.

EFFIE:
20 – 30. Big gospel sound, high belt. A vocal force. Effie is a brilliant and immature talent with a big ego and a lot to learn. Sensitive, aggressive, easily wounded – and a questionable work ethic, she nonetheless takes a huge journey in the show toward adulthood and a focused sense of her own power. She needs to be sensual and is likely not skinny. (I don’t know how you say this. She need not be fat, but there does need to be a reason that Curtis goes for Deena as the star over Effie - in terms of physical sales power.) (great mover)

DEENA:
20 – 30. Mezzo Soprano, high Mix/Belt range. Beautiful, thin (how do you say this?) with a natural generosity and sexuality that makes her a star onstage. Deena is not naturally aggressive, she’s a nurturer, who is focused and exciting onstage. She happens to have the right voice and looks to propel her to stardom. Down deep, she has a moral core and clear sightedness. (great mover)

CURTIS:
33 – 40. Baritenor. Must have F#. A charismatic, driven and ruthless visionary with the business savy to make things happen. Curtis can see the power of creating a new sound in pop music, he understands how to create it, and will stop at nothing to make it happen. He has great powers of persuasion and seduction. (great mover)

JIMMY:
35-45. Rock/R&B Tenor: has to have soulful sound and be able to wail! But also needs lower bass notes. Jimmy is the most experienced, successful performer at the beginning of the play – but is scrambling to stay on top of the charts. He is a chronic womanizer and has a tough time staying focused. A thrilling, daring, raw performer who doesn’t like to be boxed in. (Dancer)

LORELLE:
17 – 25. Belt, soprano range; strong head voice. Starts out as a wide eyed innocent with a hunger to make it big. A natural talent, with a sweetness that makes it easy to take advantage of her. She grows up through the course of the show, eventually discovering her rage and power. (great mover)

MARTY:
35-50. Baritenor, rich sound. A talent manager who after years in the business, is struggling to maintain his position. He is savy, tough and a bit jaded, but ultimately not quite quick enough to make the transition into a new era.

CC:
20 – 30. Baritenor. Effie’s younger brother. A gifted composer who relies on Curtis to thrust him into the spotlight. Not a naturally aggressive guy, he has to be pushed hard to get to the breaking point. Generally just wants to write good music, and reap the rewards. Has a natural moral code. (great mover)

Michelle/Stepp Sister 1:
17-25. Belt/mix, soprano range. A lovely, young, centered woman. While she rises with the success of the act, her sites are always focused on the interpersonal relationships, and loyalty. (Dancer)
