**Colorism is a theme throughout the work. The notes on complexion serve to inform that storyline and the relationship dynamics.**
Eddie- (Male, Black, mid 50’s) A quiet, gentle man who has seen a lot and always strives to do the right thing. But within his integrity he holds secrets that could destroy the family he’s worked so hard to keep. Eddie is the heart of the Berry’s.
Janet- (Female, Black, light complexion, late 30’s) Janet became a woman and mother too early in life. She started out as a child intimidated into silence by her mother in law and has slowly begun to find her voice and use it. She rises to defend her daughters and her take on her role in the family dynamic.
John- (Male, Black, late 30’s) John is a childlike, boisterous ball of charisma. He both masks his feelings behind big stories and tall tales as well as wears them on his sleeve. If Eddie is the heart, John is the soul. He’s stuck between being the child in his family as well as the man.
Rose- (Female, Black, dark complexion, mid 50’s) Rose is a woman who bares the trauma of her life in every action. Every threat, growl, harsh word and hug are a manifestation of her past. In the outside world she is put together, God fearing, righteous and pure class. At home she unravels with jealousy, control and the spirit of a little girl no one came to save.
Josephine- (Female, Black, dark complexion, 17) The older of the Berry’s teen daughters, Josephine is progressive and intelligent. She is also the target of her grandmother’s abuse which have turned into her own source of insecurity. Josephine is holding onto her own secrets and shame and must work hard to break the family’s generational trauma or be doomed to repeat it.
Yvette- (Female, Black, light complexion, 16) The younger Berry daughter, Yvette is content to be seen, be pretty, and be popular. She’s lived oblivious to the dysfunction in her family and that in part is due to Roses’ overwhelming favoritism. When things get tough Yvette digs her heels in and rises to the challenge, she longs to understand her grandmother and protect her sister.
Delores- (Female, Black, 50’s-60’s) One half the comedy duo that is Janet’s aunties, Delores is a pokeno playing, “I’ll pray for her”, “Oh girl no she didn’t type”. Underneath her humor and boisterousness is pure love and concern for her niece. She’s also been married a few times.
Jackie- (Female Black, 50’s-60’s) Janet’s other aunt and Delores’ sister, Jackie is convinced if she can’t explain something it’s evil and if she didn’t see it, it’s a lie. She and Delores play off of each other and their lives are fully intertwined.
