Their new next-door neighbor, Frank, is a gardener himself and spends most of his time nurturing his non-native garden to win the annual gardening competition in the neighborhood. Frank and his wife Virginia have lived here for a long time and welcome Pablo and Tania with open arms. However, when Pablo invites his whole law firm over for a BBQ, Tania and Pablo set to work on building a fence and discover that their property line is 2 feet into Frank’s beloved garden. DATES:

SYNOPSIS: The year is 1957. On the stage of a Broadway theater, an acting company has gathered for their first day of rehearsal. When the black actress in the starring role confronts her white director about his interpretation of the play, everything explodes. Filled with warmth and razor-sharp humor, Trouble in Mind is a provocative look at the way people talk about race—and a hilarious backstage drama about artists at work.
SEEKING:
WILETTA MAYER - Character is Female, Black. 45-65. A middle-aged actress. She is attractive and expansive in personality. Wiletta has been an actor for 25 years, but never a star. As an actor, a woman, and an African-American, she understands the power structure working against her—and she has learned from experience how to swallow her feelings, get along, and say the right thing. She accepts compliance as a means of survival and catalyst towards stardom.. But when she is pushed, her true colors unfold and we see a woman who can no longer be relegated to a stereotype.. As the play goes on, she grows increasingly confident and direct. Her performance of a spiritual must be galvanizing—for her, and for everyone around her. SINGS.
HENRY - Character is Male, of Irish descent . 70-79. The elderly doorman.
JOHN NEVINS - Character is Male, Black. 20’s. A young actor. He tries to look self-assured, but it’s obvious that he is new to the theater and fighting hard to control his enthusiasm. John Nevins, a college graduate, is aspiring to rise to the top of his profession. Although he believes his formal training and performances in Off-Broadway plays to be superior to Wiletta’s experience, he condescendingly listens to her advice out of deference to her age and her acquaintance with his mother. As the conflict between Wiletta and the director heightens, he becomes embarrassed by her, viewing her as too racially sensitive and ignorant of contemporary acting methods. Aligning himself with the director and the white cast members, he attempts to appease Wiletta without fully considering the validity of her complaints.
MILLIE DAVIS - Character is Female, Black. 30’s. Millie is married and says she does not need to work. She displays more wealth than the other African American characters; she wears a mink coat and an expensive watch. Unlike Wiletta she is much more vocal and uses bold, flat statements in resistance of stereotypes., and she tries to guide John's behavior. Millie also does not like the kind of roles she must play because of her race. She says at one point that she did not tell her relatives about the last production because she repeated one stereotypical line over and over again. Though Millie expresses her objections about a couple of things, she is not willing to put her job on the line for such matters.
JUDY SEARS - Character is Female, White. 18-25. A young actress who is thrilled to be in her first professional production, having just graduated from Yale. She is a young, energetic white woman who takes the privilege of her race and the financial support of her parents for granted. Earnest and well meaning, but her innocent belief in her “progressive” attitudes can make her seem cloying. When we first meet her, she is emotional and unsteady; life scares her. And yet, she has more self-awareness than one would expect.
SHELDON FORRESTER - Character is Male, Black. 65+. An elderly character man. Sheldon is a veteran actor who fawns on the director and criticizes Wiletta for disrupting rehearsals with her racial complaints. He has held such an obsequious posture for so long that he is seemingly numb to the indignities he and other African Americans suffer in the profession, but he may be more than he appears, only playing a role that pleases white people as a means of survival.
AL MANNERS - Character is Male, White. 35-50. Manners is a product of Hollywood. He is a bundle of energy, considerate and understanding after his own fashion; selfish and tactless after ours. As the director of the play, Manners is energetic, confident, and patronizing. Underneath a veneer of kindness, he’s selfish, tactless, and manipulative. He loves the challenge of a conflict, and if it helps him to win and to get what he wants, he can change his manner in an instant. He’s always watching and calculating his next step; he likes to catch others off guard. Although he considers himself to be a liberal, he treats Black and White cast members differently and is insensitive to the objections the Black members have concerning the script. As the racial strife becomes more intense, he exposes his own deep-rooted racial biases.
EDDIE FENTON - Character is Male, White. 20-39. Eager and quick. The Stage Manager. His easy-going attitude in act one becomes nervous and drawn in act two.
BILL O’WRAY - Character is Male, White. 40s-60s. A character actor who “radiates strength and power” when acting. When he drops out of character we see that he is very different from the strong character he plays. He appears to be worried at all times. He has a habit of negatively shaking his head even though nothing is wrong. Bill O’Wray is but a shadow of a man – but by some miracle he turns into a dynamic figure when in character. As himself, “he sees dragons in every corner and worries about each one.” He is the only cast member who has steady work. He insists that he is not prejudiced but is reluctant to have lunch with the black actors. At best he is insensitive, and at worst he is a bigot.
