SYNOPSIS:

Inspired by her decades-long work with prison populations, including on the notorious Rikers Island, Liza Jessie Peterson’s timely and urgent one-person show unpacks the human impact of mass incarceration in America. Fearlessly funny, smart and provocative, The Peculiar Patriot traces the migration of systemic injustice from the plantation to the prison yard.

Betsy LaQuanda Ross is a self-proclaimed “peculiar patriot,” who makes regular visits to penitentiaries to boost the morale of her incarcerated friends and family. Betsy is both victim and victor of this country’s prison system and her story turns statistics into achingly relatable stories, drawn from the experience of more than 2.5 million people behind bars.

• A - THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Any gender. Any ethnicity. Any age. Any body type. Someone who never wants to be confused about anything. A is always examining oneself. A is always searching for answers. A likes to wallow. A likes repetition until they tire themselves out. A thinks they know everything. A is not good with ending things. A always wants to be the smartest person in the room. A likes to tell people about themselves but doesn't enjoy being told about themselves.
• B - Any gender. Any ethnicity. Any age. Any body type. B always wants to get things right. B thinks if they are a good person, only good things will happen, and they are bewildered when life doesn't turn out that way. B is obsessed with being successful at everything they do: relationships, dance classes. B is always trying to do things the right way. B is also very good at endings. B moves on from painful situations quickly. B doesn't like to wallow, and B doesn't like to lose.
• C - Any gender. Any ethnicity. Any age. Any body type. C never changes. C doesn't like things to be hard. C only wants to have fun. C wants to win but rarely does - so rather than aiming to win, C aims to lose because it will hurt less. C carries resentment everywhere they go. C pretends to be happy even when they are miserable. It's the only way they know how to survive. C only wants to feel good. Feeling bad isn't fun. And C believes the whole point of life is to have fun, right?

• Elya - Sixteen-year-old, Stanley's great-great-grandfather.
