BREAKDOWN

CYMBELINE (Off Broadway)

NAATCO’s mission is to assert the presence and significance of Asian American theatre in the United States, demonstrating its vital contributions to the fabric of American culture. We present the following repertory:
- European and American classics as written with all Asian American casts;
- Adaptations of these classics by Asian American playwrights; and
- New plays – preferably world premieres – written by non-Asian Americans, not for or about Asian Americans, but realized by an all Asian American cast.
- Development and production of new plays by Asian American playwrights that incorporate other performative arts and media.

About the play: The Off-Broadway Premiere of Andrea Thome's modern translation of one of Shakespeare's most complex plays. Thome's update brings the play's language into the present, highlighting new resonances and providing a more accessible version of Shakespeare's play for today's audiences. One of Shakespeare's final plays, Cymbeline tells the story of the British king Cymbeline and his daughter, Imogen. It is a tale of deceit and jealousy, with accusations of infidelity that often draw comparisons to Othello and The Winter's Tale.

Femme, Asian/Asian American actors are encouraged to audition.

SEEKING

for all Femme, all Asian/Asian American version of CYMBELINE:

TRACK 1: Arviragus / as cast (character identifies as male, 20s to 30s) The younger of two brothers. A dreamer, active, outdoorsy. Excited to play make-believe. Positive. Good-hearted and noble by nature.

TRACK 2: Guiderius / as cast (character identifies as male, 20s to 30s) The older of two brothers. Athletic and energetic, heroic, does not realize that he’s heir to the kingdom, but shows all the nobility and kingliness of an ideal future monarch.

TRACK 3: Imogen / as cast (character identifies as female, 20s) Has spent her life as a princess in a castle, and sometimes chafes under the restrictions that has created. Passionate, incredibly clever (sometimes too clever for her own good), inquisitive and spirited, doesn’t suffer fools, a life force.

TRACK 4: ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Posthumus / as cast (character identifies as male, 20s) An orphan who has lived his whole life not knowing his true roots. Noble, incredibly idealistic, naive to the dangers of the world. Good hearted but easily swayed by villains. Inquisitive and introspective. Passionate. Yearning.

TRACK 5: Belarius / as cast (character identifies as male, 50s) A loving father, a philosopher, loves the outdoors. Reminiscent of Emerson or Thoreau. An exile. Deeply good hearted, insightful. Also, a warrior.

TRACK 6: ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Cymbeline / as cast (character identifies as male, 50s) The King. A seasoned politician and monarch, but sometimes impulsive. Has never fully healed from the disappearance of his two sons as infants decades ago. His need for supporters blinds him to the treachery that surrounds him. Threatened by the independence of his daughter.

TRACK 7: ROLE IS ON OFFER. Pisanio / as cast (character identifies as male, 20s to 40s) A deeply loyal servant. Driven by duty and honor. Deeply good. Willing to give his own life for the life of his master.

TRACK 8: Lucius / as cast (character identifies as male, 30s to 40s) A wise and strategic politician and general. Was once friends with Cymbeline, and now his chief adversary. Tactical and smart. A military man.

TRACK 9: Cloten / as cast (character identifies as male, 20s to 30s) The son of the Queen and high on the privilege that confers. Brutish, temperamental, selfish. An incel, misogynist, with the capacity for violence. Thinks he’s far smarter and more capable than he actually is.

TRACK 10: Cornelius / as cast (character identifies as male, 20s to 40s) A dutiful chemist. Has a good heart but is forced to follow the orders of a deeply wicked queen. Resourceful, and creative in finding covert ways to remain good while seeming to follow orders. A little geeky.

TRACK 11: Iachimo / as cast (character identifies as male, 30s) Sexually hungry. Machiavellian. Italian. Innovative in his treachery. Has had to struggle and hustle his whole life, and so has developed the rough, hard edges born of that life. Objectifies women. Has anger and hostility in him. Doesn’t hesitate to lie when it will result in advancement. Ignoble.
