SYNOPSIS

When otaku-besties Ren and Mai step outside to discover an anime-blue sky, their first thought is, “Damn, this edible is strong.” But it’s not long before they realize something far more sinister is afoot. Embark on a Sailor Moon-esque adventure through the Bay Area, where our nunchuk-armed heroes face off against bizarre villains—think maniacal rice cookers, evil BART contortionists, and supercharged Dim Sum cart ladies. Ren and Mai must save the Bay Area, but they can't do it alone. They'll need backup from Mai's tough-love parents, Ren's over-involved sister, and perhaps even a cute corner store employee.

This quest is as wacky as it is heartfelt. Chamoru playwright Reed Flores delves into themes of Bay Area AAPI life, queer love, and the complexities of both “born” and “chosen” families. Developed through SFBATCO’s Creators Lab and New Roots Theatre Festival, this world premiere promises to bring laughter, tears, and a craving for some ha gao!

SEEKING

Ren - Late 20s. He/him. Queer. Avoidant personality. Dreams of being a chef but works as a line cook. Enjoys old kung-fu movies and RuPaul’s Drag Race. Played Street Fighter with his straight cousins because Chun-Li was fierce. A brown AAPI person who grew up loving Spam.

Mai - Late 20s. They/she. Queer. Attachment personality. Ren’s best friend. Boba connoisseur. Secretly a black belt. Overachiever who got into a great college but dropped out after discovering their Queerness. Super smart. A brown AAPI person.

Sam/Lin/Cart Lady/Ensemble - Mid 30s. She/her. Straight. Ren’s sister. A bit intense, but well-meaning and thoughtful. She’s the glue that holds the family together. AAPI.

Cart Lady/Shadow Member/Ensemble - 20s/30s Any pronouns - to play multiple ensemble roles.

Worker/Jay/Ensemble - Early 20s. Any pronouns. Queer-ish. Versatile. Doubles as street-fighter bosses, Asian mafia lords, and rice-cooker deities. Bone breaker/street performer, usually on BART. Probably a rapper or does button poetry. Cool person who gets taken over by an alien superpower. BIPOC.

Unkoh/Pop/Ron - Late 40s/Early 50s. He/him. Straight-up stud who’s aged gracefully. Unkoh speaks with a thick pidgin accent, using puns to drop wisdom. Doubles with Pop, who is guarded and quiet. These two should be opposite personalities within one character. A brown Pacific Islander man or Filipino/a/x. Late 50s. Mai’s dad. Quiet and intimidating, but a teddy bear at heart. Talks a lot once he gets started. Like most dads, he has selective hearing.

Cuckoo/Three Ladies/Ensemble - Initially just a pawn in a quest to take over the world, but eventually finds their own autonomy and voice. Whether that autonomy is for good or evil is up for debate. Into anime and have a wide vocal range. Gender non-specific. Age non-specific.
