SEEKING:

KARLA – late 20’s, female. A stand-up comedian whose charismatic demeanor belies an incredibly dirty mouth and mind. Spunky, spirited, angry, wickedly funny, likable. She hides behind humor to distract herself from the pain of her mother's sickness.

DON – 40’s, male. Unassuming, lonely, a loveable sad-sack. He is overwhelmed by the stress of his recent divorce and his mother’s ongoing illness, but not quite out for the count.

MARCIE – 50’s, female. Karla's mother. Battling cancer with a verve and wit that masks her vulnerability. Equal parts cruel and caring, selfish and genuine.

GEENA – 60’s, female. Don's mother. Has been battling ovarian cancer for seven years, but remains brave and looks for the good in people.

SEEKING:

ACTOR – Any gender, 30’s-50’s. Actor must play a variety of both male and female characters ranging from teens to 60’s. These include (among others) a middle-aged, worn detective with a New Jersey accent; a teen girl with a sly humor and mature insight; a stylish and fiesty middle-aged hairstylist; and a whimsical male drama teacher with a slight British accent. Skill with accents, versatility, and a strong sense of humor are essential.

SEEKING:

AKOSUA – 20’s, female. Recent immigrant from Ghana. Soft-spoken, but eager to please and not afraid of hard work and responsibility. Her spirit has been dampened by a broken heart, but through the course of the play she learns to smile again. She begins with a strong accent which fades by the end of the play.

JESUS – 30’s-early 40’s, male. Immigrant from El Salvador who has lived in America for a long time. Manager of the supermarket and proud of it. He can be gruff and critical when it comes to work, but he has a soft spot for his employees, especially Ciata. A heart of gold masked by a big bark. An accent sometimes colors his dialogue.

CIATA – 20’s-early 30’s, female. Immigrant from Sierra Leone with a slight accent. Devoted, fierce, and trustworthy, Ciata is the best employee at the supermarket. Because of a failed marriage, she is wary about falling in love and opening up to men.

BOGDAN – 60’s, male. Immigrant from Romania. A life of hardship makes him look and feel 65 going on 100. He is especially loud and forceful, and his gruff attitude can overshadow his sweet and gentle spirit. He is inventive and resourceful, but sometimes lacks compassion when talking to others, particularly his wife.

MORFINA – 60’s, female. Immigrant from Romania. Bedraggled with failing health, little money, and a rough past, Morfina has little optimism left. She cares deeply about her husband, but shows it primarily through complaining about him. Enduring and patient, but also sassy and surly.

SEEKING:

SEAN – 30’s-40s, male. A theatre professional who guides the audience on a journey through his struggle with alcoholism with a dark sense of humor and brutal honesty. One part self-effacing, one part cocky, all parts likeable.

#1– 30’s-40’s, female. In addition to directly addressing the audience, actress must play a variety of roles, including Sean’s mother, who is recovering from alcoholism and the death of her husband; Sean’s patient yet distant wife; and Sean’s supportive and loyal girlfriend. Skill with accents, versatility, and a strong sense of humor are essential.

#2 – 30’s-40’s, male. In addition to directly addressing the audience, actor must play a variety of roles, including Sean’s father, who is dying from Parkinson’s; Sean’s concerned but professionally distant boss; and a tough yet caring detox counselor. Skill with accents, versatility, and a strong sense of humor are essential.

SEEKING:

Mason – 18+ actor to play 17. Male, Chinese. Mason lives alone surrounded by wealth, music, and loneliness. He longs to connect with his father in Hong Kong through more than their regular Skype calls. Creative and charming with a chip on his shoulder.

Alix – 18+ actor to play 17. Female, American (any ethnicity). Resourceful tomboy forced to grow up fast and take charge and care of her family. A dreamer whose dreams have been put on hold. Driven, passionate, resilient.

Fiona – 40’s, female, American (any ethnicity). Alix’s mom, overwhelmed by the weight of her responsibilities. Uses her physical charms as a means of security and survival. Vulnerable, lost, funny.

James – 40’s, male, Chinese. Mason’s absent father who lives in Hong Kong where he oversees a shady and dangerous business. Imposing, strapping, cocky, charming.

Oscar – 18+ to play 17. Male, American (Black/Hispanic). Alix’s friend and potential suitor. Oscar has big dreams, charming swagger, street smarts, and lots of heart. Sensitive and well-intentioned, but can become easily heated and jealous.
