BREAKDOWN

Joe Schofield 40s (and briefly 20’s) American journalist who shot famous picture of the Tank Man in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Earnest, blunt, not too happy, self-isolated.

Frank Hadley 60s American Editor of a newspaper; smooth, suit-wearing capitalist, former hippie with a remaining conscience he tries to squelch.

Tessa Kendrick 30s – 40s British sleek, urban professional woman. Lonely, smart, rogue.

Mel Stanwyk 40s – 50s American journalist, pragmatist, curmudgeonly side kick to Joe’s driven earnestness. Might be schlumpy. Sarcastic.

Maria Dubiecki 40s – 50s American senator in the Hillary Clinton model. Role doubles as
Doreen, Secretary to Frank. Dry. Seen it all in his office.
Barb, American tourist, clueless
Judy, lawyer to a Silicon Valley computer company

David Barker 30s - 40 Asst to Senator Maria Dubiecki. Wall Street on the outside but full of principles. Role doubles as
Paul Kramer, Prospect Park-type, yuppie Brooklynite in love with his 1st baby. Once was a very young journalist, Beijing correspondent.
Peter Rourke, CEO of Mytel Computers in Silicon Valley.

Zhang Lin 40s Chinese man, can seem and look older. Thoughtful, in pain, courageous, defiant, got a sense of humor. Complicated. Speaks Mandarin.

Zhang Wei 40s – 50 Chinese man. Brother of Zhang Lin, father of Harvard student Benny. Middle manager of a Chinese factory. Thrust into situations and a little lost in them, but he has his brother’s qualities under layers of adherence to rules. Speaks Mandarin. Role doubles as
Wang Pensei, proprietor of a flower shop in NY. Illegal immigrant who came in 1989 and lies low while living the “American dream” (heavy quotes.)

Young Zhang Lin 20s Chinese man. Smart, funny, happy with his beautiful pregnant wife. Unsure, in 1989, what the new China will bring. Speaks Mandarin. Role doubles as
Benny, Harvard educated, living the capitalist dream in America in 2012.
Guard, Beijing Secret Police sent to interrogate Zhang Lin

Ming Xiaoli 50s – 60s Chinese woman, seems older, very ill. Zhang Lin’s neighbor, they’re close. Funny, straight-talking. Emotional. Role doubles as
Feng Meihui, fish seller in NY, immigrant. Similar qualities to Ming Xiaoli. Proud of her daughter and a bit closer to living the American Dream. Speaks Mandarin.

Liuli 20s Chinese woman. In love with life in 1989, her husband Zhang Lin, pregnant, full of hope for the future. Role doubles as
Jennifer, Feng’s daughter, works with her in the fish shop. Going to college soon. American-ized, indeed, American. A good, understanding daughter.

Mary Chang 20s Chinese woman. Recently arrived in NY, working in a strip club, was a low-level worker on a Chinese newspaper. Her English isn’t very good, accented. Role doubles as
Michelle, Police officer in NY. Tough but nice underneath. Former girlfriend of Joe. 2nd generation American.
Deng, a Chinese woman in the present, suit-wearing, good job possessing, who comes to potentially buy Zhang Lin’s refrigerator.
