Breakdown

CHEERS is based on the wildly popular television series which premiered in 1982. A comedy performed in two acts, Cheers Live on Stage will feature the interior of the blue collar neighborhood bar “where everybody knows your name.” NOTE: We are seeking actors who capture the essence of the iconic characters below; we are NOT seeking impersonations.

SAM MALONE
Caucasian, male, mid-30s. Tall, masculine, handsome, charming, a real ladies' man. He takes great pride in his many romantic conquests but is afraid of commitment. A womanizer who initially sees Diane as a conquest but gradually falls for her, in spite of himself. Former professional baseball pitcher, an injury took him out of the game but he loves to reminisce about his glory days. Bartender and owner of Cheers. Recovering alcoholic who loves his job and is fiercely loyal to his friends.

DIANE CHAMBERS
Caucasian, female, 20s to 30s. Slim, trim, pretty, uptight, and WASPy. A college student pursuing a writing career. Book smart, not street smart. Abandoned by her fiancé so she reluctantly becomes a cocktail waitress at CHEERS. Sees herself as the moral compass of the CHEERS gang and often plays little games to get them to see the error of their ways. Her snobbishness makes her the butt of Carla's jokes; but she recognizes that even in humilitation there is an opportunity for personal growth.

CARLA TORTELLI
Female, 20s to 30s. A loudmouthed, wisecracking, cynical, Italian-Bostonian cocktail waitress. She is the mother to many ill-behaved children. A spitfire.

COACH ERNIE PANTUSSO
Male, 40s to 60s. Absentminded, loveable but bumbling bartender who used to coach Sam in baseball and now works for him at CHEERS. A widower, he has a big heart and a knack for unexpected wisdom. His innocnence and naïveté makes him easy prey to those who try to take advantage of his gullibility. Loves Sam like a son. Possesses no worldly ambitions.

NORM
Caucasian, male, late 20s to early 40s. A regular at Cheers. Occasionally employed accountant. Overweight, cynical but loveable. Loves his wife (whom we never meet) but not as much as he loves his beer.

CLIFF
Caucasian, male, 30s to 40s. A regular at Cheers. Proud employee of the United States Postal Service. A repository of useless knowledge who loves to hold forth for a captive audience of bar patrons. Strong Boston accent.

SUMNER

Caucasian, male, mid 30s. Engaged to be married to Diane, his teaching assistant. A WASPy professor of World Literature at Boston University. A pretentious intellectual.

RICK

Caucasian, male, late 20s. A relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. Currently in a slump and comes to Cheers to seek out help from SAM and COACH. May understudy the role of SAM.

GERMAN MAN

Caucasian, male, any age. Comes into Cheers with his wife, the GERMAN WOMAN. Diane’s first customers. They just want to find their lost luggage. May understudy principal roles.

GERMAN WOMAN

Caucasian, female, any age. Comes into Cheers with her husband, the GERMAN MAN. Diane’s first customers. They just want to find their lost luggage. May understudy principal roles.

MISS GILDER

Female, mid 20s to 30s. A schoolmarm. Interviews with Carla to tutor her ill-behaved children. Prim and proper. May understudy principal roles.

DEBBIE

Female, 20s to 30s. Very beautiful, but probably not very bright. One of SAM’s “booty-calls”. Sneaks out of bed with her boyfriend to see SAM. May understudy DIANE.

HARRY

Male, 30s. A con artist. Uses magic tricks and scams to outsmart bar patrons and employees, especially the gullible COACH. Weaselly, everyman look, charismatic but blends in with the crowd when he needs to.

LOIS

Female, any age. Appears to be very proper. Indecisive. Best friends with HELEN. May understudy principal roles.

HELEN

Female, any age. Appears to be very proper. Indecisive. Best friends with LOIS. May understudy principal roles.

DEREK

Caucasian, male, any age. Voice is heard offstage; does not appear onstage. SAM’s older brother. Very handsome and charming. Gave SAM an inferiority complex as a kid. Very wealthy and successful. An international lawyer. Has a beautiful singing voice. May understudy principal roles.

CINDY

Caucasian, female, 20s to 30s. Voice mostly, partially seen offstage. SAM’s date. May understudy principal roles.
