Breakdown
CHEERS is based on the wildly popular television series which premiered in 1982. A comedy performed in two acts, Cheers Live on Stage will feature the interior of the blue collar neighborhood bar “where everybody knows your name.” NOTE: We are seeking actors who capture the essence of the iconic characters below; we are NOT seeking impersonations. SAM MALONE Caucasian, male, mid-30s. Tall, masculine, handsome, charming, a real ladies' man. He takes great pride in his many romantic conquests but is afraid of commitment. A womanizer who initially sees Diane as a conquest but gradually falls for her, in spite of himself. Former professional baseball pitcher, an injury took him out of the game but he loves to reminisce about his glory days. Bartender and owner of Cheers. Recovering alcoholic who loves his job and is fiercely loyal to his friends. DIANE CHAMBERS Caucasian, female, 20s to 30s. Slim, trim, pretty, uptight, and WASPy. A college student pursuing a writing career. Book smart, not street smart. Abandoned by her fiancé so she reluctantly becomes a cocktail waitress at CHEERS. Sees herself as the moral compass of the CHEERS gang and often plays little games to get them to see the error of their ways. Her snobbishness makes her the butt of Carla's jokes; but she recognizes that even in humilitation there is an opportunity for personal growth. CARLA TORTELLI Female, 20s to 30s. A loudmouthed, wisecracking, cynical, Italian-Bostonian cocktail waitress. She is the mother to many ill-behaved children. A spitfire. COACH ERNIE PANTUSSO Male, 40s to 60s. Absentminded, loveable but bumbling bartender who used to coach Sam in baseball and now works for him at CHEERS. A widower, he has a big heart and a knack for unexpected wisdom. His innocnence and naïveté makes him easy prey to those who try to take advantage of his gullibility. Loves Sam like a son. Possesses no worldly ambitions. NORM Caucasian, male, late 20s to early 40s. A regular at Cheers. Occasionally employed accountant. Overweight, cynical but loveable. Loves his wife (whom we never meet) but not as much as he loves his beer. CLIFF Caucasian, male, 30s to 40s. A regular at Cheers. Proud employee of the United States Postal Service. A repository of useless knowledge who loves to hold forth for a captive audience of bar patrons. Strong Boston accent.
