SEEKING

Actors for various roles in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, THE MUSIC MAN, and THE WHO’S TOMMY as part of the upcoming 2018 - 2019 BROADWAY CENTER STAGE Season at The Kennedy Center. The Kennedy Center’s BROADWAY CENTER STAGE series presents fully staged concert versions of beloved musicals, including a full orchestra & chorus.

PREPARATION

Prepare a brief song appropriate to the season. Bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. Bring a headshot and resume, stapled together.

[Seymour Krelborn] (OFFER OUT, NOT YET ACCEPTED). Male, 25 - 35, Any Ethnicity. Our unlikely hero. Bespectacled, Insecure, anxious, and socially inept. Enamoured by Audrey, but lacking the courage to admit to it, he finds unexpected glory in his incredible horticultural skills. (A2-G4)

[Audrey] (This role is CAST) Female, 25-35, Any Ethnicity. Billie-Dawn-like, secret love of Seymour's life. Sweet and vulnerable, beaten down after years of abuse, afraid to dream that she is worth more than she has always been told. She has no concept of her power over men. (G#3 - D5)

[Orin Scrivello, DDS] (This role is CAST) Male, 30-40, Any Ethnicity. An egotistical dentist with a passion for leather and sadistic tendencies. Abusive, manipulative, and cruel, he enjoys wielding power over others. (G2-G4)

[Mr. Mushnik] (This role is CAST) Male, 55-65, Any Ethnicity. The seasoned owner of the failing East Side flower shop and Seymour's nosy boss. He is profit-driven, greedy, and manipulative. (G2 - F4)

[Audrey II] (This role is CAST) Male, Open Age, An actor/vocalist located offstage. A strong character singer. rock, rhythm and blues style; a sweet-talking, street-smart, rhythm and blues version of the devil. (G2-G4)

[Crystal] Female, 20-35, Any Ethnicity. Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon are Street urchins, acting as the occasional Greek Chorus - our musical guides through the story. Young, hip, and smart, these girls are the only ones who have a grip on reality. (Ab3-F5)

[Harold Hill] (The role is CAST) Male, 35 - 45 Any Ethnicity. Our story’s unsuspecting protagonist and traveling con man. Unattached, fast talking, and persuasive. Quick to make others fall in love with him, he knows how to read a room, and never overstays his welcome. He finds a formidable sparring partner in Marian, and can’t help but be enamoured by one who challenges him. (Ab2 - F4)

[Marian Paroo] Female, 25-35, Any Ethnicity. To those that don’t understand her, she appears stuffy and stuck up, but Marian is brilliant, driven, and ever curious. A champion of the library and “questionable books”, she is unwilling to compromise herself for anyone less driven and brilliant than herself. (G3-A5)

[Charlie Cowell] Male, 25-45, Any Ethnicity. A traveling salesmen, and the only one on to Hill's schemes. Tirelessly attempts to prove to everyone the true con man behind Harold Hill, in an attempt to make himself a hero.

[Mayor Shin] Male, 50-60, Any Ethnicity. A blustery, self-important politician. Begrudgingly married to Eulalie, he is skeptical of the town rumor mill.

[Ewart Dunlop] Male, 25-45, Any Ethnicity. Owner of the General Store, Member of the School Board turned into Barbershop Quartet, another bickering business man until he is united with the others by Harold Hill and sings and acts in harmony. (F3-F5)

[Oliver Hix] Male, 25-45, Any Ethnicity. Banker, member of the School Board turned Barbershop Quartet, another bickering business man until he is united by the others by Harold Hill and begins to sing and act in harmony with them. (B2-F4)

[Jacey Squires] Male, 25-45, Any Ethnicity. Owner of the livery stable, Member of the School Board turned Barbershop Quartet, another bickering business man until he is united with the others by Harold Hill, and sings and acts in harmony. (C3-C5)

[Olin Britt] Male, 25-45, Any Ethnicity. Editor of the Gazette, Member of the School Board turned into Barbershop Quartet, a bickering business man until he is united with the others by Harold Hill, and learns not only to sing in harmony, but to behave in harmony. (F2-C4)

[Marcellus Washburn] Male, 30-40, Any Ethnicity. Former con man and chummy friend of Harold Hill, he now lives in River City and is trying to get out of the game. Harold’s helper in time of need, he attempts to help him flee town when the con goes south. (G2-A4)

[Tommy Djilas] Male, 15-20, Any Ethnicity. An attractive young man from the wrong side of the tracks, he is secretly courting Zaneeta. He finds confidence and trust in Harold, growing into the assistant leader of the Children’s Band.

[Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn] Female, 40-50, Any Ethnicity. Mayor Shin’s peacock wife. A society lady, and member of every auxiliary organization in town. A serial gossip and snob, she has trouble keeping her opinions to herself. (D4-D5)

[Alma Hix] Female, 25-45, Any Ethnicity. A gossip - “Pick-a-Little Lady” married to Oliver Hix. (G3 to G5)

[Winthrop Paroo] Male, 8-12, Any Ethnicity. Marian’s baby brother, shy and isolated due to his pronounced lisp, saddened by the loss of his father. Winthrop finds his confidence through the help of Harold Hill and embraces the marching band. (C4-Eb5)

[Maude Dunlop] Female, 25-45, Any Ethnicity. A gossip - “Pick-a-Little Lady” married to Ewart Dunlop (G3 to G5)

[Ethel Toffelmier] Female, 25-40, Any Ethnicity. A gossip - a “Pick-a-Little Lady”, and Marcellus Washburn’s girlfriend. (G3 to G5)

[Mrs.Squires] Female, 25-45, Any Ethnicity. A “Pick-a-Little Lady” married to Jacey Squires. (G3 to G5)

[Zaneeta Shin] Female, 14-18, Any Ethnicity. The mayor’s fresh-faced daughter, harboring a crush on the town “bad boy”. On the verge of learning how to stand up for herself.

[Amaryllis] Female, 8-12, Any Ethnicity. Piano student of Marian’s, fostering a schoolgirl crush on Winthrop. Confused and saddened by Winthrop’s lack of response to her attempts to reach out. (C4-E4)

[Mrs.Paroo] Female, 45-60, Any Ethnicity. Widowed Irish mother to Marian and Winthrop, sweet, cheerful, and always plotting. Always keeps her hands busy, and yearns for happiness for her children. (Ab3-Eb5)


THE WHO’S TOMMY:

[Tommy/Narrator] Male, 18-25, Any Ethnicity. Narrating the life of TOMMY Age 4 and TOMMY Age 10, eventually growing into TOMMY himself. An embittered young genius stricken deaf, dumb, and blind after a childhood trauma. A natural master of pinball, and later a cult-like hero figure to masses enthralled by his story. (Db3-B4)

[Captain Walker] Male, 30-45, Any Ethnicity. A former soldier with lingering guilt. Violent at times, he loses control when faced with another man in his home, resulting in Tommy’s trauma-induced impairments. Constantly seeking cures, he carries the burden of his son’s disabilities. (F3-C#5)

[Mrs. Walker] Female, 25-45, Any Ethnicity. Weary from years of watching her son struggle and false cures. Tired and frustrated, she blames herself for Tommy’s traumas. She dreams of having a normal family one day, and ultimately wishes only for her son to be happy. (G3-D6)

[Cousin Kevin] Male, 18-25, Any Ethnicity. A bully with sadistic tendencies. Tortures his cousin when they’re young, and later seizes the opportunity to profit from Tommy’s success. Tommy’s closest “friend”, but always with an ulterior motive. (Ab2-B4)

[The Gypsy] Female, 25-35, Any Ethnicity. The “Acid Queen”, a drug dealer and prostitute. Claims that she can cure Tommy’s disabilities through experimental and non-traditional means. Sexual, unique, thrilling and terrifying. (G3-F5)

[Uncle Ernie] Male, 30-45, Any Ethnicity. Mrs. Walker’s unsavory brother. A lecherous, drunken bachelor with a preference for young boys. A slimy opportunist, he molests young Tommy, and later starts a camp to profit from his popularity. Unscrupulous and exploitative.

[Tommy - age 4] , age 4-7, Any Ethnicity. Innocent and pure, Tommy descends into his own mind and is struck deaf, dumb, and blind after witnessing a traumatic event.

[Tommy - age 10], age 8-12, Any Ethnicity. Preadolescent Tommy, taken advantage of by Uncle Ernie, and ruthlessly bullied by Cousin Kevin, he finds focus and purpose in the pinball machine. A presence in grown Tommy’s mind always, he pleads to be seen and healed. (Boy Soprano)
