BREAKDOWN
YOUNG AL COLUMBATO
A boy of seventeen. Italian-American, rough around the edges and sometimes defiant, affected by a challenging home life. Despite being more experienced and more social, he is fiercely loyal to his friend Birdy and enjoys their unique adventures together.
YOUNG BIRDY
A boy of sixteen, gentle and inexperienced, a dreamer. Uncomfortable with the norms of adolescent socialization, Birdy takes solace in his fascination with birds and their ability to fly, the understanding of which becomes a passionate pursuit for him.
AL COLUMBATO
A sergeant of twenty-two years, Italian-American recently returned from war, wounded in combat. Al is summoned to the mental hospital where Birdy is being treated in hopes that he can help stir him from his condition. Al still carries resentment from his childhood and his fierce loyalty/love for Birdy.
BIRDY
A soldier of twenty-one years. Birdy’s experience in the war has greatly affected his sanity, leaving him without speech and living life as a bird in a mental institution. Seeking an actor with strong movement skills for this role.
DR.WHITE
A doctor-major of fifty years, authoritative, Dr. White is in charge of Birdy’s care at the mental institution. He interrogates Al about their past in hopes of unlocking Birdy’s current condition.
RENALDI
A hospital orderly of twenty-two years. Renaldi is a Contentious Objector to the war, serving in the mental institution rather than in combat. He works with Al to try and revive Birdy from his condition. Pragmatic and thoughtful.
