PREPARATION
Please wear dance-appropriate attire and jazz shoes. Some may be asked to stay and sing. Please prepare 32 bars of a song in the style of the show. The score was written by Roger Miller and includes music that is country-western, gospel, spiritual.

Rehearsals begin October 1, 2019. Rehearsal location TBD (we may rehearse weeks one and two in LA. Alternatively we may rehearse all weeks in Ventura. Housing is provided during all Ventura rehearsals and performances). First preview is October 23, 2019. Opening night is October 26, 2019. Scheduled closing is November 10, 2019 with a possible extension of up to two weeks - until November 24, 2019.

BREAKDOWN
We are seeking strong actor/singers and musicians. Most actors will be asked to play multiple roles. Ability to play instruments a plus. Particularly guitar, fiddle, harmonica, piano, and banjo.
Jim
Late 20s to 40s. African-American. A runaway slave. Must be a fine actor with immense strength, intelligence and dignity who can also handle comedy. This is a major singing role as well. Bari/Tenor.
Huck Finn
Any age to play 15 - 18. A vulnerable youth who finds the courage to follow his heart and trust his conscience when society tells him he’s wrong. This role needs a consummate young actor and singer. Funny. Adventurous. Bari-tenor. Ability to play an instrument a plus.
Tom Sawyer
Any age to play 15 - 18. Huck’s best friend. Imagines he’s a great adventurer but it’s all talk. Good heart, well-meaning. Bari-tenor. Ability to play an instrument a plus. Also plays Sheriff Bell, age 25 - 35, a confident, plain-spoken man of authority under pressure, and Hank, Andy or Lafe, one of a band of lazy idiots.
Pap Finn
30s - 50s. An actor of great strength who can play both groveling and threatening. Needs to be a fine Rhythm and Blues singer. Earthy Baritone. Ability to play an instrument a plus. Also plays Hank, Andy or Lafe, one of a band of lazy idiots, and Harvey Wilkes, a refined English gentleman.
Mary Jane Wilkes
Late teens or early twenties. Smart, kind, gracious and warmhearted. Mezzo belt and mix. Looking for an expert violinist/fiddler. Country sound.
The Duke
Any age to play 30s - 50s. A slightly fragile, flamboyant “artistic” type - rough around the edges, with no moral compass. Fancies himself a great tragic Shakespearean actor. Good with patter. Looking for a fine tap dancer. Bari-tenor. Also plays the School Teacher, the classic Ichabod Crane type, The Doctor, a kind and professional man of medicine, and Simon, age 16, one of Tom Sawyer’s gang members.
The King
Any age to play 40s - 50s. An ignorant racist with some “song and dance” chops. Uneducated and unrefined, even when pretending to be high class. Just smart enough to be extremely dangerous. Baritone. Also plays Judge Thatcher, a respectable man of the law, and Silas Phelps, Tom Sawyer’s not-too-bright deep-south Uncle.
Widow Douglas
Any age to play 30s - 50s. Mezzo soprano. Big hearted and motherly. Sincerely worried about Huck’s immortal soul. Sings Mezzo Soprano. Also plays Sally Phelps, Tom Sawyer’s not-too-bright deep-south Aunt, and Susan Wilkes, one of Mary Jane’s sisters.
Miss Watson
Any age to play 30s - 50s. The stereotype of a spinster. Pinched. Unpleasantly hard-edged and Judgmental. Sings alto. Also plays the Strange Woman, a good-humored, wily woman living by herself in a remote cabin along the river, Joanna Wilkes, one of Mary Jane’s suffering sisters, and Jo Harper, one of Tom Sawyer’s male gang members.
Alice
30s to 50s. An actress of great stature. African-American. A slave in the Wilkes house where she has been treated like family. Must have an inspiring gospel singing voice. Sings the soulful spiritual, Crossing To The Other Side.
Alice's Daughter
Any age to play teens. African-American. Must be a fine actress and sing very well. High belt, gospel singing voice.
Ben
Flexible age range. Ben is a member of Tom Sawyer’s gang. Also plays Counselor Robinson, age 30s to 50s, a wise and kindly adviser to the Wilkes sisters, A Skiffman, any age, a racist bounty hunter, and various other characters throughout. Looking for an actor who also plays professional level trumpet.
