Breakdown
ALENE JOHNSON/ENSEMBLE
Female, Early 60s, Caucasian. A tall, attractive woman with elegance about her. Alene, a recently retired third grade teacher is bright and lonely. She has returned home to Holt to live with her mother. This change in her life has caused a crisis of identity and self-worth. However, she finds hope in a budding friendship with Alice, a newly orphaned eight-year old girl who now lives in Holt.
REVEREND LYLE/ENSEMBLE
Male, Late 40s, Ethnically ambiguous, Likely mixed race (i.e. Caucasian and Latino and/or Native American) Reverend Robert Lyle is a handsome, charismatic, idealistic preacher and the new pastor of the Community Church in Holt. He has been assigned to this church because of a controversial sermon he gave in a much larger and more prominent Denver church in support of an openly gay preacher. This “demotion” has left him wounded. Passionate about helping others, he finds himself at a loss for ways to truly connect with the people close to him, especially his wife and son.
BEVERLY LYLE/ENSEMBLE
Female, Late 30s-40s, Caucasian. Beverly is the beautiful, practical preacher’s wife. She feels isolated since moving to Holt, although she desperately attempts to make the move from Denver as positive an experience as possible, but she has grave concerns for herself and her son. She is angered at her husband damaging his career and their family life by defending a gay clergyman.
FRANK/RICHARD/ENSEMBLE
Male, Early 50s, Caucasian. Frank is Mary and dad’s son. Having grown up gay in the small community of Holt, he escaped immediately after high school and never came back. He appears to Dad in a kind of “spirit” of his son, who still feels much of the pain and bitterness caused by his childhood and his father’s rejection of his sexuality. He is sarcastic, blunt, and sad. Richard is Lorraine’s boyfriend in Denver. His good intentions are marred by his natural self-absorption and wanting to have a good time.
