BREAKDOWN
GENERAL BENJAMIN BUTLER:
Male-identifying, Late 40s, Caucasian. Newly-made General in the Union Army, but not a military man: before the war was a lawyer in Massachusetts. Portly and not very neat in appearance; highly intelligent, logical, and self-assured underneath. Has a ready sense of humor. Actor must be able to both bring gravitas and also lean into the humor in the script.
SHEPARD MALLORY:
Male-identifying, 20s, African-American. An escaped slave. Young, bright, and well-spoken. Will do anything not to be sent back to the Southern lines, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a plan that he thinks is the right one. Brash and funny, yet wary. Has a tendency to get excited and say things he shouldn’t.
