In casting, Virginia Repertory Theatre endeavors to be as inclusive as possible. We invite all performers, including gender non conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors, to audition for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities.
Please prepare two songs (approximately 32 bars each) - one from a musical theatre selection and one from a pop/contemporary selection. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring sheet music in your key. AND a comedic monologue of not more than 2 minutes. Also, please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

Please note that Virginia Rep is a fully vaccinated workplace and all employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination will be required in order to attend auditions and callbacks. Performers must be masked inside the audition venue. Once inside the audition room, instructions will be given for when to remove your mask for your individual audition.
An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

Carole King (THIS ROLE HAS ALREADY BEEN CAST) - Female/Female Identifying, Age: 25-35, Mezzo Soprano (F3-F5) White. An aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, appealing, funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good natured, unassuming and often the peacemaker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music.
Gerry Goffin - Male/Male Identifying, Age: 25-40, Tenor (C3-G4), White. Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. Innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. He always seems to want what he cannot have.
Cynthia Weil - Female/Female Identifying, Age: 25-40, Mezzo Soprano (F3-E5), White. A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. Cynthia is whip-smart, chic and playful. She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go for it. Excellent comic timing.
Barry Mann - Male/Male Identifying, Age: 25-40, Tenor (C3-A4), Any Ethnicity. A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. Neurotic, but likable. Barry is his own worst enemy and is stronger because of his partnership with Cynthia. Excellent comic timing.
Don Kirschner - Male/Male Identifying, Age: 40-60, Bass/Baritone (A2-C4), White. Don is an influential music publisher and boss to Carole, Gerry, Cynthia and Don. He is fast-talking, energetic, and sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker.
Genie Klein - Female/Female Identifying, Age: 40-60, White. Carole’s Jewish mother. Genie had her own artistic dreams, but life, motherhood and an unfaithful husband got in her way. She is very protective of Carole and wants to make sure her daughter avoids the same mistakes. Limited singing, non-dancing role.
ENSEMBLE:
Janelle Woods/Shirelle/Ensemble – Female/Female Identifying, Age: 20-30, Alto, Black. A pop singer, notably performing the hit “One Fine Day”. An artist whom Carole and Gerry write music for. Janelle becomes a focus of Gerry’s extramarital affairs. Strong movement preferred. Will double in ensemble roles throughout the show.
Little Eva/Shirelle/Ensemble – Female/Female Identifying, Age: 18-30, Alto w/ High Extension, Black. A pop singer who begins working as a babysitter/nanny for Carole and Gerry’s daughter. When Carole and Gerry struggle to find the right person to perform Carole’s latest tune “Locomotion”, they realize Little Eva is the perfect fit. Has charm, charisma and strong movement and vocal ability. Will double in ensemble roles throughout the show.
Lucille/Shirelle/Ensemble - Female/Female Identifying, Age: 20-30, Alto w/ High Extension, Black. Donnie’s secretary. Mostly spoken role. Will double in ensemble roles throughout the show and will include dancing in ensemble numbers.
“Uptown” Singer/Shirelle/Ensemble - Female/Female Identifying, Age: 20-30, Alto w/ High Extension, Black. Active member of the ensemble and has a featured moment singing the song “Uptown.” Will double in ensemble roles throughout the show and will include dancing in ensemble numbers.
Marilyn Wald/Ensemble – Female/Female Identifying, Age: 20-30, Alto, White. A pop singer, notably performing “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” Will double in ensemble roles throughout the show and will include dancing in ensemble numbers.
Betty/Ensemble – Female/Female Identifying, Age: 20-30, Alto, White. Carole’s childhood best friend and confidant. Mostly spoken role. Will double in ensemble roles throughout the show and will include movement in ensemble numbers.
Neil/Lou Adler/Righteous Brother/Ensemble – Male/Male Identifying, Age: 35-50, Bari-Tenor, White. Influential record producer and executive in the sixties. Singing and some movement in ensemble numbers.
Nick/Righteous Brother/Ensemble – Male/Male Identifying, Age: 20-40, Bari-Tenor, White. New York based session musician. Responsible for getting Carole to come out of her “woman behind the curtain” shell and perform her music as herself. There’s a connection with Carole, but she is weary of getting involved. Singing and some movement in ensemble numbers.
The Drifters/Ensemble - Male/Male Identifying, Age: 20-40, All ranges will be considered to make up this group of artists. Looking specifically for 1-2 strong tenors. Black. The Drifters are a 4-Piece all male pop/r&b group of the time (i.e The Temptations/Commodores). Strong ability to blend/harmonize tightly and strong movement required. Will double in ensemble roles throughout the show.
