Marie Antoinette – Woman. The Queen of France. She loves to live extravagantly and has no perception of the suffering of everyday people. Originally from the Austrian royal family, she was married off to Louis XVI for political purposes. She does not mask her disdain for her husband, whom she regards as inept and emotionally immature. She does not show depth because she has never been expected to.
Louis XVI - Man. Marie’s husband. The King of France. He is somewhat inept and emotionally immature. He has a condition that impedes his sexual performance but is curable with surgery, which he resists. He does not have a very healthy or close relationship with Marie.
Joseph - Man. Marie’s older brother. He is the Holy Roman Emperor and later, sole ruler of the Hapsburg empire. He does not prioritize his sister’s happiness. His sister’s seeming inability to produce an heir threatens the alliance between Austria and France that exists because of her marriage to Louis. This role may double with Revolutionary and/or Guard.
Axel Fersen - Man. Marie’s lover. He is a Swedish diplomat who has been received by the royal family. Throughout the revolution, he remains loyal to Marie and the crown.
The Dauphin - Boy. Ten years old. Marie’s son. He loves his mother deeply but receives little attention from her.
Yolande De Polignac - Woman. A false friend. She spends a great deal of leisure time with Marie but abandons her when rumors begin to swirl about the queen.
Therese de Lamballe - Woman. A true friend. She tries delicately to counsel Marie while also doing her best to cajole her. She stands by Marie as long as she can.
Mr. Sauce - Male. A shopkeeper. Works hard and is in no mood for the aristocracy. To a snob, he may appear simple but is much smarter than people might suspect.
Mrs. Sauce - His wife. She helps Mr. Sauce with the shop. Like her husband, she’s not sympathetic to the crown. And also like her husband, she lives a simple life. But don’t get it twisted; she is no simpleton.
A Sheep - Appears to Marie in moments of crisis or complication. The sheep endeavors to get her to understand the world around her and the role she has played in France’s current circumstances. Not unsympathetic, but also not a royalist.
Royalist - Very sympathetic to the Crown and to Marie.
Revolutionary 1, 2, 3 - Captors and tormentors of Marie. They have no sympathy for her plight and believe that the literal death of the monarchy is essential for democracy to take hold in France. This role may be cast separately or with one actor doubling.
Two Guards - They keep a watch on Marie and the rest of the royal family while they are captive. They never speak directly to Marie. These roles may double with Joseph and/or Revolutionary.

Booth – Man. Black. The underdog. Lincoln’s younger brother. He masks his insecurities with aggression. He can be volatile and unpredictable. He wants Lincoln to teach him how to deal Three-Card Monte so that he can earn the respect that comes with being an expert hustler.

Sister Aloysius – This role has already been cast. Woman. A nun in the order of the Sisters of Charity St. Vincent de Paul in the Bronx who also serves as principal of the parish school. A stern, unforgiving woman who holds herself and everyone to a high standard of discipline and morality. When she suspects Father Flynn of abusing a young boy, she sets out on a mission to bring the truth to light. She is guided by firm certainty.
Father Flynn – Man. White. Irish heritage. A teacher at Sister Aloysius’ school. While she is his superior in job position, he outranks her in church hierarchy as a priest. He is charming and takes a warmer and more personal approach to his religious practice and teaching than Sister Aloysius. When he is accused, he does everything in his power to interfere with her crusade in order to maintain his reputation.
Sister James – Woman. 20s. A young nun who teaches at the same school as Aloysius and Flynn. Like Flynn, she takes a warmer approach to her work, which makes Sister Aloysius concerned that she is easily influenced and led astray despite good intentions. She is ultimately pulled between the two, torn between loyalties and wanting to believe in the goodness of both her superiors.
Mrs. Muller – Woman. 30s. Black. Her son Donny is a student at the school. She is determined to keep her son safe from his difficult circumstances, including an abusive father. She works as a housekeeper and displays strong fortitude even as she tries desperately to juggle her various competing priorities. She is a devoted mother doing her best, even if that means making difficult decisions that are difficult to understand.
