BREAKDOWN

This delightfully funny and touching comedy is based on the author’s acclaimed memoir of his life with his widowed father, when his dad (Sol) asked for help to maneuver through the computer dating scene after the death of his wife. In the play, Sol’s search inspires his son, David to do the same, resulting in a series of failed and funny relationships for both men, bumping along on the road to ultimate happiness with the right partner. Sol’s dates are all played by the same actress and David’s dates are all played by the same actor. Great parts all around in a play that embraces new definitions of family and friendship.

DAVID

(Male, 30’s- 40’s)- A writer for the New York Times Style Section. He is gay, single, culturally Jewish and fastidious in all things. His comic point of view softens his judgmental nature and need for the world to conform to his ideas. As much as he is frustrated by his father, he loves him deeply and wants him to be happy…On his terms. Seeking a strong comic actor.

SOL

(Male, 60’s)- David’s father, also culturally Jewish. He is a recent widower who is not happy being alone. He has given himself a deadline for finding his next wife and is eager to start looking right away. He enlists his son, David, to help him navigate the internet in search for a prospective wife. A Walter Matthau type, he is the opposite of David – happy go lucky, sloppy, and does not care what anyone thinks of him, sometimes to a fault. Seeking, a strong comic actor.

MAX

(Male, 30’s)- David’s ultimate match, he is a bright and cheeky book editor with insight and an open spirit. Max is far from perfect and tells you before you can judge him. He is not at all what David thought he wanted – but he is ultimately what he needs. ACTOR ALSO PLAYS SEVERAL OF DAVID’S BAD DATES AND A NURSE. Seeking a strong comic actor.

EDIE

(Female, 60’s)- Sol’s primary love interest. She was Sol’s deceased wife’s close friend. She has inner strength, kindness, and the feeling that she’s been around and seen a lot. Her great comfort with herself and who she is makes her very secure in her dating life. She is fine to date more than one man at a time, which upsets Sol. David is adamantly against the match. ACTOR ALSO PLAYS FLORENCE, GLORIA, and a NURSE. Seeking strong comic actress.
