SYNOPSIS: Tom Stoppard’s absorbing play takes us back and forth between the centuries and explores the nature of truth and time, the difference between the Classical and the Romantic temperament, and the disruptive influence of sex on our orbits in life - 'the attraction which Newton left out’.
GUS COVERLY / AUGUSTUS COVERLY: 18+ to play 15 years old. BIPOC male. Gus (present day) is Valentine and Chloe's younger brother, who has been mute since the age of five. Augustus (1809) is Thomasina's trouble-making younger brother. Strong with heightened language.

JELLABY: 40s-50s, male-identifying. A butler - and a gossip. (1809) [CAST]
EZRA CHATER: 30s, male-identifying. A poet - unsuccessful. Challenges Septimus to a duel after learning about his affair with Mrs. Chater. (1809) [CAST]
RICHARD NOAKES: 40s-50s, male-identifying. A landscape artist. Lady Croom’s gardener. Exposes Septimus and Mrs. Chater’s affair. (1809) [CAST]
LADY CROOM: mid-30s, female-identifying. Thomasina’s mother. Rules with an iron fist. (1809) [CAST]
CAPTAIN BRICE: mid-30s, male-identifying. Lady Croom’s brother. A sea captain. Falls in love with Mrs. Chater and marries her after Mr. Chater’s death. (1809) [CAST]
HANNAH: Late 30s, female-identifying. A best-selling author researching the elusive hermit of Sidley Park. Uninterested in entertaining Bernard or Valentine’s flirting. (Present) [CAST]
BERNARD: Late 30s, male-identifying. A don at a modern university. Tries working with Hannah on his theory about Lord Byron. Publicly announces his theory without further evidence, only to be proven wrong by Hannah. (Present) [CAST]
