Equity actors for roles in AMERICAN ECLIPSE (see breakdown).

The indigenous characters in American Eclipse are members of the Ute tribe, and there are some moments that feature Shoshone language.

Performers from all Indigenous/Native American backgrounds are encouraged to audition.

No roles will be understudied. All Stage Managerial positions are currently filled.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a brief musical theatre singing selection, about 1 minute in length. Material (traditional or contemporary MT) that shows range and lyricism is most helpful here. Please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

[LEWIS LATIMER] Black, Early 30s, Tenor, sings to high G/A. Visionary inventor and patent draftsman. Distinguished, intelligent, charismatic. Our tour guide through the story.

[THOMAS ALVA EDISON] white, Early 30s, high baritone, contemporary, sings to high A. The prolific inventor and innovative business leader as a younger man. Cocky, self-assured. A real showman.

[MARIA MITCHELL] white, late 50s, powerful high mix, not a belt. A renowned astronomer, educator, and crusader for Women's rights. Brilliant, tough, driven, no-nonsense. A fighter.

[PHEBE MITCHELL KENDALL] white, late 30s, Soprano. Must be classic legit soprano to high C. Maria’s younger sister, conservative. Shocked to find herself out of her hometown for the first time in her life.

[NAOMI BUTTER] Black, 40s, powerful mezzo-mix. The fiercely protective matriarch of the Butter family. Able to sustain D above middle C. Maternal, strong. A force.

[CHLOE BUTTER] Black, early 20s, Naomi’s daughter. Mezzo-mix to D above middle C. Doubles as SELENE (Naomi's granddaughter, in her 40s) in later years. Warm and inviting.

[WILL BUTTER] Black, mid-20s, lyric baritone, NAOMI's son and husband of Annie. Strong-willed, stubborn, but protective and loving of his family.

[ANNIE BUTTER] Black, early to mid 20s, Soprano, legit, to high A or B. Will's wife. The soon-to-be mother of her family's next generation.

[CHIEF COLOROW] Indigenous/Native American, 50s+, Baritone to high-baritone. Strong, dignified, thoughtful. A leader.

[TABERNASH] Indigenous/Native American, 20s, high baritone-tenor, contemporary. Colorow's Son. Passionate and impulsive. A warrior.

[RECHA] Indigenous/Native American, 40s, Soprano to high G/A, legit foundation, contemporary straight tone also a major plus. Colorow’s wife. A warrior. Assertive, proud.

[SIHA] Indigenous/Native American, 30s, Mezzo-mix, contemporary straight tone also a major plus. Colorow’s wife, measured, intelligent.

[PUPA] Indigenous/Native American, 20s, Mezzo-mix, covers alto range, contemporary straight tone a major plus. Colorow’s wife. The youngest, a peacekeeper.

[TUCK “RALPH” LING] Chinese, 30s, Tenor to high C - capable of both legit and contemporary sound. A passionate astrologer and interpreter of the sheng xiao. Hardworking, optimistic, enthusiastic.

[CHENGUANG] Chinese, 30s, Mezzo/Mix, Tuck's wife. Grounded, a realist. NOTE: Character has some dialogue/singing in Mandarin.

[JAMES CRAIG WATSON] white, 50s, a strictly classical baritone. Noted Astronomer and discoverer of planets. Arrogant, hotheaded, overbearing.

[HELENA WATSON] white, mid 40s, Mezzo/Mix, James's wife. Kind, patient, loving, brilliant. [NATHAN MEEKER] white, 30s-40s. U.S. agent for White River Indian Agency.
