BREAKDOWN

Sims
male, 60s, British. A famous writer who fears his talent is fading as his popularity ebbs. In Hollywood to write a screenplay, he must juggle his wife, his longtime assistant, and a young actor who has taken up residence in his house.

Basil
male, 50, British. Sims long-suffering assistant and onetime lover, who faithfully serves his best interests even when Sims would prefer he didn't. Sharply witty and tired of being taken for granted, he still encourages Sims.

Claire
female, 50s, British. Sims's wife in a marriage of convenience. An actress of some fame who has been related to character roles of late. The star in public but drops the performance in private. She's fallen in love with John, but while her marriage is loveless, she's .

John
male, 50s, American. A Hollywood producer who has commissioned Sims' screenplay. He has been expecting a summons to testify in Washington about his political past. He and Claire have fallen in love. Gruff and blunt but good-hearted

Father Theodor
male, 30s, American. Technical adviser on religious issues for many Hollywood films, he works with Sims to assure accuracy. As the two discuss religion they begin to admit the secrets they both have. Somewhat naïve despite his years in the film capital, he avoids facing his own history.
