BREAKDOWN
MACBETH:
Playwright: William Shakespeare
Director: Rick Dildine
Fight Director: Paul Dennhardt
1st Rehearsal – January 10th, 2022
Opening – February 4th, 2022
Closing – February 27th, 2022
Interested in actors who play any of the following instruments: fiddle, violin, bagpipes, accordion, tin whistle, flute, bodhran, Scottish tenor drum, guitar, harp, or any other traditional Scottish instrument. Also interested in actors who sing.
Interested in actors with combat experience in sword, shield, and longsword.
MACBETH – Male – 35-45 years – Any ethnicity
A brave, ferocious soldier, married to Lady Macbeth. His ambition begins to run wild after hearing a prophecy by three witches that he will be made King. Impetuous, passionate, susceptible to dreams of power and glory, he puts aside all morals to fulfill his ambitions. Deeply in love and connected to his wife, with whom he plots the murders of all who stand between himself and the crown. Strong swordsman preferred.
LADY MACBETH – Female – 30-45 years – Any ethnicity
Macbeth’s wife. Poised, well bred, fiercely intelligent, ultimately a deeply ambitious woman who wants position and power, but later falls victim to guilt and madness over her complicity in plotting the murders of Duncan, Banquo and others. Deeply in love and passionately connected to her husband.
THE THREE WITCHES – Male or Female – 30-70 years – Any ethnicity, Any Gender
Three very powerful, otherworldly and androgynous creatures who prophesize that Macbeth will be king, setting into motion the plot of the play. They can cast spells and influence people and events. They are not completely human but may often take on the specific characteristics of humans. They are neither male nor female, so the actors playing them must be able to sublimate their gender in some way or another. They appear throughout the play as witches and as other characters, observing the action and exerting their powers. Blended with some of smaller parts, which they subsume, they are major players in the drama. Non-binary and trans actors encouraged to submit for these roles. Particularly interested in actors who play instruments.
MACDUFF – Male – 30-50 years – Any ethnicity
Powerful, vital soldier, who mistrusts Macbeth and his rise to the throne, even before Macbeth arranges the murder of Macduff’s wife and child. A formidable and worthy opponent, he leads the movement to remove Macbeth from the throne, in order to avenge the death of his family and to put the rightful heir on the throne. Athletic and fierce. In every way the ultimate protagonist. Strong swordsman preferred. Unarmed fighting skills a plus.
BANQUO – Male – 35-45 years – Any ethnicity
Another brave soldier, friend to Macbeth’s, he is with Macbeth when the witches make their fateful prophecy that Macbeth will be King and that his (Banquo’s) heirs will be kings. Unlike Macbeth, Banquo does not succumb to the temptation to engineer these prophecies. His character is a stark contrast to Macbeth’s in that he chooses the path Macbeth does not: a path in which ambition does not lead to betrayal and murder. After Banquo is murdered by Macbeth’s henchmen, he returns as a ghost to rebuke Macbeth for his actions. Straightforward, clear, uncomplicated, upstanding. Strong swordsman preferred.
DUNCAN – Male -- 60-70 years – Any ethnicity
The King who is brutally murdered by Macbeth. A strong, kind, and just ruler and a figure of indisputable authority. Generous with praise for Macbeth and Banquo, who have fought bravely for him.
MALCOLM – MALE – 18-35 years – Any ethnicity
The eldest son of Duncan and heir to the throne, we need to be able to see him initially as an attractive and somewhat inexperienced young man, with a reserved air of mystery about him. However, we need to believe him when he says he’s debauched and also believe him when he says he’s a virgin. Eventually, he ascends to the throne and should seem like he belongs there. A sensitive, young leading man of great potential and star quality.
LADY MACDUFF – Female – 25-40 – any ethnicity
Macduff’s wife and mother of their young son. Warm, poised, lovely, loves her son, with whom she has a great rapport. Our hearts should ache to see her murdered.
MACDUFF’S SON – Male – 8-11 years – any ethnicity
The younger looking the better, son to the Macduffs, a bright, articulate boy, clever, sweet, feisty.
FLEANCE – Male – 12-15 years – any ethnicity
Banquo’s son, who survives Macbeth’s attempt to murder him.
ROSS – Male – 30-40 years – any ethnicity
A nobleman, serves Duncan and later Macbeth, because he must, but comes to understand Macbeth’s moral corruption. In the meantime, serves as a kind of consigliere, often bearing difficult news. Subsequently joins with Macduff and Malcolm to remove Macbeth from the throne.
LENNOX – Male – 25-40 – any ethnicity
A nobleman, serves Duncan. Of good breeding with an essential goodness and an innocent, sweet quality.
MURDERERS – MALE – 20-50 – any ethnicity
Dangerous, volatile, a terrifying pair of criminals conscripted by Macbeth to murder Banquo, Fleance (whom they fail to kill), and Macduff’s wife and children. Strong unarmed combat skills a plus.
PORTER – MALE – 40-70 years – any ethnicity
A strange presence. A drinker, he’s a caretaker at Macbeth’s castle who must answer the door in the middle of the night.
DONALBAIN – MALE – 18-25 years – any ethnicity
Duncan’s son and Malcolm’s younger brother. Strong, Athletic, attractive.
SIWARD – Male – 45-60 years – any ethnicity
A powerful warrior who leads his army in alliance with Malcolm and Macduff against Macbeth. Fearsome, gruff.
OLD MAN – MALE – 60-90 – Any ethnicity
An old man who discusses the ominous happenings of the past days with Ross.
SCOTTISH DOCTOR – Male – 45-60 – any ethnicity
A doctor who observes Lady Macbeth’s strange behavior and is disturbed by what he sees.
GENTLEWOMAN – Female – 18+ -- any ethnicity
Attends Lady Macbeth and is deeply worried about her strange and erratic behavior.
YOUNG SIWARD – Male – 18-25 – any ethnicity
Athletic, solid as a rock and a born leader. Great fighter who fights Macbeth. Strong swordsman preferred.
SETON – Male – 18-25 – any ethnicity
Serves Macbeth, he’s torn, as he must remain loyal to Macbeth, but sees his corrupt motives. Smart, intuitive, not a natural fighter, but not a wimp.

CRYSTAL, RONETTE, AND CHIFFON: (Female, Black, 20’s-Mid 30’s, Vocal Range- Alto/Soprano Ab3-F5) Street urchins, acting as the occasional Greek Chorus. Young, hip, sassy, and smart, these girls are the only ones who have a grip on reality. They regularly speak directly to the audience. Must be excellent singer with strong belts.
MR. MUSHNIK (Male, Mid 50’s-Mid 60’s, White, Vocal Range- Baritone G2-F4)
The seasoned owner of the failing East Side flower shop and Seymour's nosy boss. He is profit-driven, greedy, and manipulative.
AUDREY (Female, Mid 20’s-Mid 30’s, White, Vocal Range- Soprano G#3-D5 with strong high belt)
Bleached-blond, Billie-Dawn-like, secret love of Seymour's life. She has poor self-worth and education, but incredibly good looks and a sweet and vulnerable demeanor.
SEYMOUR (Male, Mid 20’s-Mid 30’s, White, Vocal Range- Tenor A2-G4)
An insecure, put-upon florist's clerk and eventual hero. He is a genuine, well-meaning man with a heart of gold, who is taken for granted because of his clumsy ways and poor social skills. Naïve and extremely insecure.
ORIN SCRIVELLO (Male, 30-40, White, Vocal Range- Baritone G2-G4)
An egotistical dentist with a passion for leather and sadistic tendencies. Audrey's abusive boyfriend, who is targeted by Seymour. The actor also plays a variety of smaller roles in the show.
VOICE Of THE PLANT (a.k.a.-AUDREY II) (Male, 20-50, Black, Baritone G2-G4)
An actor/vocalist located offstage. The voice is that of a conniving, street-smart 'villain.' A funky Rhythm and Blues voice is best. Actor may play small roles at top of show.
THE PLANT (a.k.a-Audrey II) (Any Gender, 20-50, Any Ethnicity)
Puppet. An anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado, the plant has an appetite for human flesh that is appeased by Seymour. Puppeteer doubles as other sizes of the plant and may be asked to play small ensemble parts.

Musical Director: Joshua Zecher-Ross
1st Rehearsal – May 2nd, 2022
Opening – May 27th, 2022

Looking for strong singer, actor, dancers who are well versed in comedy, and can sing tight three and four part harmonies. Looking for real on the line character work- please avoid commenting on the material, play it for keeps.
Setting: Springfield High School gymnasium, 1958 and 1968.
CINDY LOU (Female, 18-28, Any Ethnicity, Vocal Range- Mezzo-Soprano E3-F5 with strong belt) knows she is the prettiest girl at Springfield High. She knows she will be named Prom Queen and acts out against her best friend Betty Jean when things don’t go her way. She makes the biggest change between Acts I & II, having learned the lessons of true love and loss. Sings melody line on most songs, so the other girls hang their vocals on this voice. Among the songs she sings lead are: Allegheny Moon, Son of a Preacher Man, and Maybe.
MISSY (Female, 18- 28, Any Ethnicity, Vocal Range- Soprano G3-A5) is the over-achiever of the group. Very controlled, very concerned that everything at the prom turns out wonderful and perfect. Head of the Prom Decorations Committee, and absolutely smitten with her music teacher. Her best friend is Suzy. Wide vocal range, floating high vocals and belting throughout the show. Among the songs she sings lead are: Secret Love, You Don’t Own Me, and Wedding Bell Blues.
BETTY JEAN (Female, 18- 28, Any Ethnicity, Vocal Range- Alto- D3-E5 with a strong low range) is the class clown and tomboy, always vying for attention with Cindy Lou, her best friend. It’s also highly probable that Betty Jean wants to be with Cindy Lou herself, but just doesn’t even know what those feelings really are. Cindy Lou steals Betty Jean’s boyfriend away, which causes a lot of the friction at the prom. She holds this grudge against Cindy Lou until they make up at the ten-year reunion. Among the songs she sings lead are: Lipstick on Your Collar, I Only Want To Be With You, and That’s When The Tears Start.
SUZY (Female, 18,-28, Any Etnicity, Vocal Range- Mezzo-Alto G3-E5) is the gum-chewing, happy-go-lucky, go-along girl. Super-best friends with Missy, Suzy is always a little giddy and a little silly, and finds great pleasure in everything she does. In love with the lighting operator, completely surprised when named Prom Queen. Frustrated, sad, hormonal, and pregnant in Act II. This role requires an excellent part singer and expert comedienne. WARNING: Do not hire a ditzy person to play the ditzy blonde. Has both a sweet and soulful voice. Among the songs she sings lead are: Stupid Cupid, Hold Me, Thrill Me, and Rescue Me.
