Breakdown
In a not so distant future where children have never known a world without war, resources are vanishing and what’s left is controlled by unseen factions. Soldiers still train and wait for battle, but there seem to be no enemies left to fight and no one, especially those in charge, seems to know who has won. American soldiers Smith and Leadem kill time at a worn out desert outpost swallowed by sand on the other side of the world. Dutifully fulfilling their mission, they wait for a sign from the enemy, for further orders, for anything. As their rations shrink and the desert, sky, and sand seem to grow and expand around them, they fight for clarity and sanity, to stay on task, and to serve as they’ve sworn to do. Is the enemy trying to kill them, or is it the country they’ve been fighting for that’s the real darkness they’re running from? As the days fall away it becomes less and less possible to know what is future, past, living, dead, or dream.
SEEKING:
SOLDIER 1/SMITH
mid 20s – young, average American guy and the default leader of a two-man desert operation. Capable, volatile, with extreme emotional depth and physical stamina.
SOLDIER 2/LEADEM
21, a young and completely average American kid, but with very little of Smith’s confidence. Swept through a war he doesn’t control or get, he looks like his heart’s traveled out of his eyes and left his body here. Extreme emotional depth and physical stamina.
SOLDIER 3/MILLER
early 30s, a more seasoned soldier, though not higher ranking. He’s survived in the desert alone and is lucky to be alive. Extreme emotional depth and physical stamina.
MOM
early 50s, mother of Leadem and Brother. She exists outside and away from the war in California’s Central Valley, but is always connected to it. She is beautiful and worn out by life and being left alone to do it all.
BROTHER
17 going on 18, Leadem’s little brother. Kind, wise, but a kid. Also existing in California, outside and away from the war, but understanding it deeply through his connection to his brother.
SERBIAN WOMAN
late 20s, a guide who is lost herself; a creature of war who carries its weight but somehow lives outside of it. The character must speak fluent Serbian.
